Amundsen

Hi folks; In my daily paper today reports that Norway
is resuming the search for Amundsen and crew who
vanished in the Beaufort sea near Bear island. The a/c
they say was a Latham 47 flying boat.Could someone
post a pic i’ve never seen one.anymore info on this
would be great.I wish them the best of luck!
No doubt Amundsen is having a pint with Sir
Franklin in the same igloo!:dev2:

Thanks for the link. I gather that three parts of the Latham 47 were recovered; a wing float and two petrol tanks. If I’ve read it correctly one petrol tank was given to the Norwegians and the other two parts were preserved at the Musée de l’Air, Paris.

Do any of these parts still exist?

i wonder
what kind of arivall Amundsen would get if he is
found?

IIRC he is still a national hero in Norway and quite rightly. He was one of their firts national icons after independence in the early 20th century. A true pioneer of polar exploration who learned and adapted to be able to travel with relative ease over the snow and ice.

Scott gets (quite rightly IMO) a hard time on some basics of polar exploration (case in point, want to mark a depot in the snow?. Do you use a single whit e flag, or multiple dark colour flags in an “X” shape over a wide distance, each giving bearing and distance towards the supplies?)

Bit of a soapbox of mine this one !

The search

Hi folks; Thanks Newforest,Shortc for the pics. She
reminds me of a Curtiss,Felixstowe. So not the first
mission to look, the Norwigens must of closed in a
few areas taking ice flows and such. The articale
says the descendants have givin thier blessings,
if Amundsen is found will he be taken home?
Over here our goverment is undertaking a large
search for HMS Terror and Erubus.I hope someone
is making a t/v doc from this search and i wonder
what kind of arivall Amundsen would get if he is
found?

Wasn’t a fuel tank from Amundsen’s aircraft found around the time of his loss?

I seem to remember somebody had cut part of it away to make some sort of boat.

That is correct – it was found soon after seemingly modified, no other trace, same as the airship and part of the crew that they were all looking for initially.

Amundsen was a true great in terms of Arctic exploration, never could settle away from the ice.

There’s a monument to the Latham 47 carved into the hillside at Caudebac-en-Caux near Honfleur on the banks of the River Seine:
