Hi All,
As an Aussie, I’m always in awe of the lads and lasses that pioneered the route between the UK and Australia.
If you were to link our two lands today and retrace their footsteps, what classic aircraft would you choose?
(…and please, leave the GPS at home;) )
Cheers,
Owen

Monospar Croydon if we are allowed to bring the dead back to life.
I’ve just uploaded a page on the Monospar Croydon on a virtual museum I’m creating out of my memorabilia collection. I have an original sales brochure for the aircraft – see here: http://www.lomcovak.com/museum-monospar.html

That’ll be an R-100 then 😀
It has to be the sheer luxury of a cruise out there in an Empire flying boat – although I was always very impressed by the chap who flew the first microlight (a Shadow?) to Australia in the 80s . It would still be quite an adventure but achievable.

Not being different at all, Portagee!
Boats were an integral part of the story. My plot would be to use a descendant of the Short C Class flying boat to retrace the step; one of the Sunderland further developed flying boat series [Sandringham/Solent/Seaford] if one could be prised away or borrowed from an owner.
Indeed, some years ago I was proposing that a group should start a deluxe [and maybe adventure? ] service by flying boat over the old Empire boat route. Although I got over it when I thought about the logistics, a proposition was floated in the media to do so but nothing came of it.
Just a thought and Merry Xmas to All!
G’day 😉

Just to be different…. A flying Boat, the Martin 130 or Boeing 314. The height of luxury in their day.

Airspeed Consul. Probably no historic link with any of the pioneering flights but the same period and I’m not brave enough to comit myself to a trek like that in a single engine aircraft.

In the spirit of the flights to be honored, how about something from before WW2?
Perhaps a DC-3, or something in that vein?
