An interesting midget submarine

A midget submarine with a lovely look, but I don’t know anything about it.
Who can supply some detail information? Thanks!

Well now that we are one the subject- are there any displays of various other midget subs around?I have seen the Japanese types that attacked Sydney Harbour during WWII, being a former member of the RAN, I had access to the displays on various naval bases including Fleet Base East which has the mid section of a Japanese Midget on display.

I know that there is a Wellman x-craft on display down in Holebrook about three hours drive south of me. One of the few Aussie Wellman X-craft that were stationed in Fremantle, WA where the current Fleet Base West is now.

Any others around- I’b be interested in seeing the German Milchkau as well and even some of the Charriots used.

Mea culpa! If you look further up the thread, you will see that Tinwing actually identified it correctly, unlike me! 🙁

It is indeed the SS X-1, which is sitting in the US Navy Submarine Force Museum, Groton Connecticut.

My understanding is that the top North Korean midget sub you posted is not a Sang-O but a P-14, very similar to the Iranian Ghadir class.

My illustration of the P-4:

The lower one is the Sang-O not a “Yugo”.

And lastly a typical Yugo boat – a bit sketchy on the details this one.

Note that the drawings aren’t to scale; the Sang-O is the biggest of the three and the Yugo the smallest.

Moe info following internet research: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread285661/pg
If anyone can correct my drawings and research I’d be very chuffed. Thanks.

Oops! 😮

It did remind me of the North Korean Sang-o types though! :diablo:

It is Sang-O type,right?

By the way, is the below Yugo type of North Korean?

It certainly does remind me of the various ‘rogue state midgets’ and that was my first (and only line of thought)!

Thanks for the info Tinwing, seems a bit harsh though.;) 😉

It looks like one of the North Korean or Yugoslav mini-subs, especially the former. If memory serves, the displacement was quite high for a mini-sub, i.e. 50% of the displacement of a small coastal sub like a Type 206 (300 tons or so…). This sort of thing is typically used for either infiltration (NKs moving spies in and out of SK), or mining, with the ability to carry a couple of torpedos, or the equivalent load of mines. Quite effective against the right enemy, and potentially a threat, despite limited capabilities!

Nope!

Wrong on all counts.

It is actually the American X-1, on display at Groton, Connecticut.

First question:

Where is it?

It appears to be on display, in a museum setting?
