An interesting P-51D with genuine wartime history…

…because this is a wartime film.

Looking for something else on Pathe (http://www.BritishPathe.com) I found this probably previously unseen footage of a rather famous P-51D and driver in a mixed back of rushes, oddly spliced together.

Here’s the pics:

No pleasing some people! πŸ˜€

Works for me, ‘taint good enough for you, fine.

The stills facility gives high enough res stills to be able to answer a number of markings questions on Walrii and on Martin Mars for a decal sheet we’ve been working on. The low res shots of the Mars taking off with JATO assist were worth watching to me – sorry you regard ’em as too rough!

Cheers

Sure Albert.

Can’t see the problem however. On the other hand, you can download as many low res clips and high res stills (albeit watermarked) as your computer will stand, through a broadband connection, which you may then play with to your heart’s content – for free.

The sound is original, and I have projected the low res film to a group to demonstrate the site to great approval. The high res stuff is worth it if you want a particular something at 100% quality; but for general research, info, and the chance to hear (for instance) Jacquiline Cochran in 1942, as well as a host of others (Bob Stanford Tuck growning mushrooms!) it’s unbeatable. I found footage of the prototype Seagull V being fired off from Farnborough’s catapult in 1933 – priceless even at low res.

Cheers!

Yes, I have downloaded several clips, but the quality is only just viewable!

Yes, British Pathe News have some real gems in their archives. Only trouble is they want Β£25 per clip (not per video) if you want a VHS cassette and not even DVD!!!

They sent me my video of the Whirlwinds free of charge !!!!

In fact, most of the footage regarding that famous Mustang, filmed on 7th August 44, was used in a 1986 video “Preddy, the Mustang Ace”, produced by Sam Sox Jr and John Lambeth. This documentary is 1 hour long and is really excellent. I hope they will transfer it on DVD someday (and make a longer documentary in the process, hopefully…)

Your example of George Preddy’s “Cripes A’Mighty 3rd” is a nice one – there also exist many great photos taken at the same time.

Interesting. Many of this ‘stuff’ was at press calls, so there’s a surfit of info from one day/place on a topic, and nothing else around that time; but this footage was in the rushes, and very good, though AFAIK unused. Interstingly too, is that the three Mustangs visible in the footage, one is a high back model – so 2/3 ‘D’ models is a higher percentage than I usually expect, but supports my thesis that the ‘D’ is over-recognised as the ‘W.W.II’ Mustang; the bulk of the Mustang’s war was fought with B and C models.

My favourite bit of Pathe footage is of the 263 Sqn Whirlwinds taken at Angle South Wales in 1942, very rare footage indeed.

Hi JDK

Yup – British PathΓ© really has some goodies there – Found various sequences of the 354th FG shortly after D-Day in France plus the same unit at a later stage, most probably in Germany. There are also many British Mustang I sequences and the Korean War is also well covered re. the P-51.

I said ‘Oddly spliced’ Here’s the Mosquito I aluded to yesterday. (Steve Young’s machine πŸ˜‰ ) at nought feet with the sea above… Most odd. Lots more camera gun footage and some bloke in a funny beret. Thought the British Army had better dress standards than that. πŸ˜€
