On behalf of the Essex Historic Military Vehicle Association I would like to invite all aircraft cockpit owners / exhibitors to attend the annual EHMVA show, The Military And Flying Machines Show on 2nd-3rd August at Damyns Hall aerodrome, Upminster Essex.
The Essex HMVA are a new charity formed to administer and run the Military and Flying Machines show, the same team who have successfully run the show are still in position but by becoming a new charity we are not constrained by the limitations of our previous governing body and can offer a more fully rounded and professional approach.
Last year the show had 300+ military vehicles, 65+ re-enactment groups, 1000+ re-enactors, a two hour flying display, classic cars, a huge MAFVA model marquee, an equally large beer tent and two days and evenings of free entertainment. We aim to cater for everybody, indeed public attendance figures bear this out as last year we had in excess of 18,000 public attendees! We would love you to become part of this and would like to extend an invitation to anybody who would like to display a cockpit section or any other aeronautical display, military or civil, no age restrictions. If you are passionate about your hobby / collection and would like to display this whilst having a great time we would love you to attend.
Our website: http://www.essexhmva.co.uk
Show website: http://www.militaryandflyingmachines.org.uk
As an exhibitor you will be given wristbands allowing access to all areas of the show over the whole weekend. you can camp in the exhibitors campsite and the evenings entertainment is free. No public are allowed on site outside of show hours and there is a security team in place to keep the site safe. Although the show is on 2nd-3rd August you can arrive anytime from 2 pm on Thursday 31/7 and leave anytime until Monday 4th August, obviously you could arrive at the weekend and if you can only make it for one day that will be ok.
Please give some consideration to attending our event, it promises to be a great weekend!
If you are interested or need more information please e-mail me: glen.newman@essexhmva.co.uk. We are mindful of the fact transportation of the bigger exhibits can be a problem and could help in this respect. We can build your show area around you, if you’d like to attend and give me an idea of what you intend to display then we can work together to help you in this. If you need to be undercover let me know and provision for this can be made. As a new addition to our show I am determined to get this right from the start, let’s work together to make it a great weekend for everybody!

The airfield will remain open during the show as it’s a live airfield in it’s own right.
The Spitfire from the BBMF will perform flybys on the Sunday, we also had the Dakota booked but it seems to have become ill again!
We also have two aircraft from the Army Historic Flight although we are unsure if they will allowed to carry out a flyby.
We are trying to book aircraft for a static display, even though the dear old CAA will still charge for them!
Come on chaps give us some support, we are trying our best to have a flying content to the show, even though it’s an uphill struggle!
I can confirm that Bunsen Honeydew doesn’t work for the HMVA, nobody does. The Essex HMVA is a Charity Incorporated Organisation run solely by volunteers, not for profit and for the love of the hobby.
By: stuart gowans - 14th June 2016 at 14:24
So even the airfield is closed then? can you not still have flybys; the B17 came right over us last Saturday (twice) not much higher than at a show don’t think it counted as a display.
By: Bunsen Honeydew - 14th June 2016 at 13:35
Don’t just consider it, do it.
Come on, get out and talk to people who don’t have a clue what you’re doing, enlighten them.
It’s good fun and you might learn something from someone who manufactured or worked on or flew the same type as your cockpit or even, as has happened at Damyns Hall, someone who worked on the actual aircraft your cockpit was detached from.
Alf’s pleas, he’s a miserable pleader, don’t do the event justice. The lack of flying is a disappointment but not so much as to make it not worth attending. The variety of forces represented there with high levels of accuracy and the arena displays are stunning.
And in response to a comment made privately to me, I don’t work for the event or the HMVA, I’m just a cockpit owner who thinks that we need to get out more and I’m putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak.

On behalf of the Essex HMVA I would once again like to invite all cockpit owners and exhibitors to attend the Military and Flying Machines show to be held at Damyns Hall aerodrome on 6th-7th August 2016.
If you would care to scroll back on this post you will see what the event is all about and the type of show we try to organise.
Sadly like many small airshows the CAA have killed off the air display part of the show. As a charity we simply cannot afford the enormous costs now involved in organising a small airshow, the final nail in the coffin being the CAA’s insistence on passing over all liability for the show to Flight Display Directors and airshow organisers personally.
We are striving to make this our Tenth Anniversary show the best ever and would welcome any cockpit owners or aeronautical exhibitors to our show.
Please give some consideration to attending, we can promise you a warm welcome!
Glen

I’m very tempted but the temptation isn’t as strong as the fear of the wife and kids reaction if I don’t go on the holiday that starts on that weekend.
Was really good last year and the amount of interest in the cockpits shown by people was very high.
By: Alf Tupper - 30th July 2015 at 19:18
Is there anybody else who would like to join us for the Military and Flying Machines Show on 8th -9th of August?
The airfield will be marked out this weekend and whilst there is plenty of room should anybody else like to attend if I know I can make provision for them with the Cockpiteers already booked in.
This show will be our biggest and hopefully best so far, we have 70+ re-enactment groups and 300+ military vehicles booked in, a two hour flying display and two evenings’ free entertainment. Can I tempt any more Cockpiteers to attend?

B17-man that’s a shame, I’ve seen photographs of your project and it looks stunning. It would have created a lot of interest at the show, especially as we have Sally B performing on the Sunday.
Perhaps you would consider joining us next year? The show will be the second weekend in August as this year.

I was trying to get things ready to bring it this year, but the wife’s booked a holiday, ******
By: Alf Tupper - 24th June 2015 at 19:43
Time Marches On as they say and with this in mind is there anybody else who fancies joining us for the Military and Flying Machines show this year?
The site is starting to be planned out now and we are taking daily bookings for re-enactment groups, vehicles, etc etc. There is plenty of space for as many people who would like to come and there is no time limit, but is there anybody else who will at least express an interest in exhibiting?
As soon as I know I can plan that part of the display field and make sure that all of the cockpit owners owners are sited together in a nice spot on the airfield.
The Essex HMVA are happy to reimburse cockpit owners for their fuel costs to and from the show, and would welcome anybody who would like to exhibit.
So come on chaps who’s up for a new experience? All being well the weather will be on our side as well!

COCKPITS TO DAMYNS HALL!
Amongst the many attractions of Damyns last year was included some great flying performances including not just the best but the longest, Spitfire display I have ever seen – it was surprising to say the least.
BUILDING UP DAMYNS AVIATION DISPLAYS
As aviation people we do need to reach a wider audience and not just appear to be keen, but actually show, that passion about what we do like the Damyns regulars, who are into their jeeps and tanks etc.
I can’t see what more MFMS can actually do to encourage cockpiters to bring their projects along and the covering of fuel bills is a rarity indeed. I hope to bring a Sea Hawk cockpit but the revised Damyns date this year means it clashes with something else and I won’t know until later in the calendar if I can definitely come along as a result.
If I do it will be because my fuel bill is covered due to ‘challenging’ times as they say in the financial press, while regarding wear and tear concerns, a motor vehicle/trailer wears down daily or whenever its used – this event is only once a year and 250-450 mile round trips won’t use that much rubber up really. I wonder how much it costs to bring a tank to the show, as opposed to a much more mobile cockpit!
Yes time may be an issue re family and work commitments, but again Damyns is annual only to plan for like many other events, while being better publicised in advance than many. I have nil doubt whatsoever that any cockpiter will be happy to show people or fellow admirers their own exhibit in the evening also as well as during the day.
COME ON COCKPITERS!
As Alf has said, the beauty of the HMVA show is
“All weekend and gives ample opportunity to mingle and play once the public has gone home.”
“There is a huge beer tent and catering vans on site, and 2 nights of free entertainment. The Essex HMVA understand the problems faced by cockpit owners and will happily chip in with some petrol money. Hopefully more will take a leap of faith in subsequent years.”
Come and have a great weekend with lots of friendly people and organisers.

I’m in London, bit short on farmers of the agricultural type.
Looking at people’s faces there’s plenty of the other type of farmers
By: stuart gowans - 3rd June 2015 at 07:34
I’m not sure of your location, but most medium to large farmers have their own weigh bridges now days, always worth an ask if the gates are open.
By: Bunsen Honeydew - 2nd June 2015 at 14:12
I believe 2.9M is the legal limit without a movement order/ escorting; I seem to recall about 1M overhang to the rear, and up to the 2.9M on the sides suitably attired with warning triangles and running lights for night time.
It’s worth looking at whether you are insured for trailer work , and also the gross weight of the combination, as many vehicles have very poor towing capacities.
Thanks for that, so 9’6″ maximum width and it can overhang. That’s useful. Means I don’t have to have an escort and provided it’s safe the trailer can be narrower than the fuselage.
No idea what the gross weight will be. Been looking for weighbridges locally, haven’t found one yet.
By: stuart gowans - 1st June 2015 at 14:23
On that sort of subject, anyone know what restrictions there are on widths of trailers and if the load can extend beyond the sides of the trailer?

Well I will be going, as its in Essex, but wont be able to bring the B-17 cockpit along, will save that till next year.
So are you bringing the B-17 this year?

If you would care to join in the fun by displaying,
Glen

The Essex HMVA is delighted to confirm that the Huey helicopter will be displaying on both days of The Military and Flying Machines show. The Huey always gives an awesome display and is always a very popular item in the varied air display.
Additionally on Sunday 9th of August we’re delighted to say that Boeing B.17 Sally B will be taking part in the air display, well worth the trip out just to see her display. In addition to the BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane on the Sunday we also have the Kent Spitfire displaying on both days. There are of course other aircraft to be confirmed so it should be quite an airshow.
If you would care to join in the fun by displaying, or if you need more information please feel free to drop me a line. Don’t forget that as exhibitors entry to the show will be free
