Last monday, me and the rest of the crew, had a little time to kill here in Italy, and went to see San Marino. On the way out of there, just after the border with Italy, in the direction of Rimini, I saw a really strange sight! It was a small hill covered in aircraft!
It looked like a one-time farm on top of a hill, with aircraft all-around. All of them were in not-so-good state judging from the highway, with very weathered livery. What I could identify while we drove past were: MIG 17 and 21, An 2, a wing of an F104 sticking from the heap and a lot of other, mainly jet, things scatterd all over the hill.
My question is, is it a museum of some sort? There were no signposts or anything along the highway, and as we were already a little late for our pick-up we didn’t have time to investigate any further.
If it is worth further investigation, please let me know!;)

Ahh, thanks Ant.
Maybe I’ll try and have a look there next time I’m here.

Hi Galdri,
It sounds very much like the Museo Dell’Aviazione at Cerbaiola, near Rimini. There was an article about the museum in Flypast quite a few years ago now, which included a complete listing of what’s on display. Unfortunately, being as it was so long ago I can’t garauntee that I’ll still have the issue it was in,but I can have a look if you’d like.
Among the exhibits is Gloster Javelin FAW.9 XH768,formerly a gate guard at an RAF station in Germany. From the pics I’ve seen it appears that most of the machines on display are more than somewhat the worse for wear, the poor old Jav included.
On a somewhat distasteful note, the museum also has on display a large amount of wreckage from the MB339’s which collided in mid-air at Ramstein back in 1988 (the Ramstein Disaster as it’s become known). 🙁
