According to a Seattle area newspaper, a stock analyst predicts the recent union strike against Boeing will force the planemaker to base future projects away from Seattle. This could apply to the 737 follow on and future 777 variants.
He believes they’ll build a new facility in the southern U.S. where unions are weaker…like EADS planned tanker facility.
Boeing has already committed to build the 787 in Washington state…

I hope this isn’t another case of a union shooting itself in the foot…
or wounding the goose that lays the golden egg…
I think that’s just it.
The unions are loathe to accept any change it would seem.
In the past, unions have killed companies in the UK by not accepting cost reduction measures and have put themselves out of a job as a result.
Sometimes unions need to bit the bullet and accept changes if it means the company and the greater share of jobs with thrive.

I don’t think there is any doubt about it….this is in fact exactly what the union has done. My prediction is that the company will be further incentivized to outsource work AND move more work away from Seattle, and the union will attempt to negate this through political activity from a labor-friendly congress and president. The fight goes on.

If they do that it would certainly be ironic. They only just closed down the Long Beach fasclity in Southern California.
I don’t think the Long Beach facility would help them with labor costs.
In a project like this, the cost of a factory is the least of their concerns.
They’re looking for somewhere cheaper and with less militant union influence.
