And the winner of the Christmas competition is ………..

A routine re-supply to the SAS by the El Adem station flight Pembroke circa July 1965.

Congratulations to the ‘Earthbound Misfit’ Steve Young who was spot on and ‘hopelessly correct’.

Just seven years prior, in May 1958, at 26 deg- 42’- 45.7” N / 24 deg.- 01’- 27” E, oilmen from BP located…………………….

Whoa

Ok I completely missed the boat here, when I first saw your contest I knew the type of aircraft but in your contest you asked what was BEHIND the photographer as this airplane would be in front of him. I found your question strange as how could you tell what was behind him without intimate knowledge of what the photographer was standing on to take the picture so I didn’t even bother answering… well next year I’ll just send an answer…:)

Happy new year to all, Gerry

Steve,

The photos are two of a great set that have been sitting in the in-tray of a ‘well known UK aviation magazine’ for 18 months, awaiting an airing to a wider audience. Maybe 2004 .

My uncle was the Station Commander at El Adem. I have just retrieved the souvenir that he kindly gave me a couple of years ago. It is a poppet valve from one of the Pratt and Witney engines and still absolutely pristine and as good as the day it was fitted – a truly treasured possession. I see on the box it reads ’27 May 1965′ and refines my original estimate of ‘circa July’. The serial of the Pembroke was WV706 by the way.

Well stone me. I have to say it was just a lucky guess, but based on the clues in the photo; desert, looked about early sixties, and the fact that the question was posted on a historic aviation forum… 😉

Oh, and thanks to snapper for reminding me of the aircraft’s name. Team effort… 🙂

Cracking photos by the way Mark. Was your uncle with the Pembroke, or one of the SAS boys?

Flood,

To the question:-

The photographer of this shot has his back to…………….

Steve Young replied:-

Hmmm… can’t remember the aircraft’s name, but possibly that B24 which was rediscovered in the Libyan desert, and whose mortal remains are still held in a Tripoli police compound…?

Followed by:-

That’s the one. (Bet I’m hopelessly wrong though! )

ps Of course the software puts the the thread title in the dialogue box and this has perhaps confused you. 🙂

So… How does Steves guess of the discovery of Lady Be Good win when the answer is – by your very admission – the re-supply of an SAS unit some seven years later?:confused::confused:
Well done Steve – don’t get me wrong, I don’t want the prize; you won – its yours! Just can’t figure it out!
