And not only F1 – in my youth I was a sucker for most forms of motor racing although never bikes, for some reason, although we used to go to the old dirt track scrambles sometimes before most of the tracks closed!! It all used to be seat-of-the-pants stuff, which is why, as you you know from my posts, I rather fell out love wit the sport when it became technology driven. I get more of a kick taking my grandson karting than watching F1 these days!!

Ah, That would explain it then, I have only ever been an F1 fan. Why is it we always think of things as “In the good old days” have things in general worsened?, or do we just forget the bad times.and remember F1 in the past as the good old days?.

Oh, Linc – you’d have to Google but I think it ran for 5 years – 1985 to 1990 perhaps….it was Formula 3000 or Formula Ford,. I think. I went once and it was great fun. But big city tracks are now impractible and staggeringly expensive I would imagine.

Do you remember the Birmingham Superprix in the late 80s?

I still think that the best days in F1, were when they had the Turbo Charged engines, when, all of a sudden, a billowing cloud of black smoke signalled the end for one Teams car.
That little shi*e Ecclestone has a lot to answer for helping to kill F1. as it used to be. Safety has improved tremendously since the sad death of Senna. I like to watch the Monaco GP, however, the driver that gets Pole, and gets in front at the start, is usually the winner. I would like to see a race, around London, now that would be interesting. Are you listening Boris?.

Ah, But was it just a “Splash and dash?”.
Just a very quick tyre change. There’s no refuelling these days, sadly. On average, F1 Pit Stops are around the 3.3 second mark. That Red Bull stop was, as much as it makes no difference (in a non-F1 world sense), a full second quicker. If I remember correctly it was Mark’s second Pit Stop out of three.

When the F1 cars had to refuel (which should be brought back today in my opinion) Ferrari were one of, if not the, quickest guys in the Pit Lane. It was incredible seeing them and McLaren changing tyres and refuelling when they both came in on the same lap.
Last year, Red Bull set the World Record with Mark Webber of, if I remember correctly, pretty much 2 seconds flat… From the car physically stopping, being jacked up, changing tyres, put down and being released.

I remember watching and saying to my Girlfriend: ‘Did Mark just literally drive through!?!?’

Reminds me of this old joke
Ferrari’s Formula 1 team manager decided to employ some Liverpudlian teenagers as their pit crew. This was because of their renowned skill at removing car wheels quickly. At the first practice session, not only did they change all 4 wheels in 6 seconds, but within 12 seconds they had re-sprayed, re-badged & sold the it to the McLaren team for 8 cases of Stella, a bag of weed & some pictures of David Coulthard’s bird getting shagged up the a**e. 🙂

I can’t get the link, but I remember Ferrari, once doing a tyre, and fuel change in 5 seconds flat.

Wow, but it wasn’t really a ‘stop’ was it.
