Android and iOS Apps

Can anybody recommend and good smartphone applications to aid in aircraft spotting.

I have recently downloaded an app called Air36 from the Android store which is good at managing my sightings on my phone, there is a full and lite version with the full version supposedly containing over 500,000 registered commercial aircraft.

I am interested to know if there are anymore that would assist?

The FR24 ipad interface has been revised over the past few months. Reg can be turned on for the map overlay under settings as Charlie says. Pretty epic to watch a friend or loved one flying over the oceans.

Planefinder gives you the a/c reg. easily and FR24 does not. (In my limited experience).

You can go into settings, where there is a multiplicity of options. Select whatever ident you prefer. When you tap on the aircraft all the other information is displayed immediately against the aircraft. If you choose reg number in settings it is displayed adjacent to the aircraft image continuously. I would only add that FR24 runs better on my current iOS than it did on my earlier Android device.

Thanks for the recommendations. I am a fairly new, recently converted, aircraft enthusiast and look forward to contributing to the forum posts.

Simply for spotting I agree with Newforest, although the other way round – I prefer FR24

Thanks for the details on air36, I’m downloading the free trail software now.

I prefer fr24 over plane plotter, I like the custom graphics. You can also try the android app from live atc. The downside is that their is no UK coverage, but its still very entertaining to listed to, especially the one guy at JFK who shouts at pilots who don’t listen to him. You do get some overlap coverage from Dublin, Shannon high level and Amsterdam to give you advance warning of traffic heading your way. The UK north Atlantic HF coverage is broadcast.

For spotting and recording with text and photos, which is what you use air36 for the only other one I have seen, but not used, is Aircraft Plane Spotter Free. Simply for spotting I agree with Newforest, although the other way round – I prefer FR24, but they are both good, and it probably depends which platform you use the app on.

I presume you have ‘Planefinder’ (good) and FlightRadar24 (not so good). Welcome to the Forum!
