Yes, the same question was asked on a Vintage Aircraft Club visit to BBMF last week. The crew confirmed that they are escape hatches, which are removed to allow a little extra ventilation at low level on hot days, when the inside of the Lancaster gets a tad toastie!
Great photos Anna. As ever, in awe!

It’s just for ventilation Nostalgair, the Lanc fuselage is reputed to get up to a temperature somewhere in the region of “Bloomin’ Hot” on a summer’s day.
Great shots Anna, nice catch of the Lanc and seagull formation.

Lancaster hatches
Looking at the above photos has reminded me of something ive been pondering on for a while, Those two hatches in the upper fuselage, are they always open? is it not damned draughty/noisy and if the heavens open do they pop them back into place, also why fly with them off, quick access in case of emergency? or am i a dim wit? answers on a postcard please!
