Anniversaries in 2007

Next year sees the 50th anniversary of the weapons tests out of Christmas Island, so as its December, can anyone else think of any anniversaries like first flights and retirements etc that fall next year.

Christ –

I know- quite a list isn’t it? I hadn’t realised the MB326 was that old.
Oh, there’s also the not insignificant occasion of the 60th anniversary of my birth:D 😀

The first 40 years of Gazelle helicopters!

BTW, Any plans to mark the anniversary?

Hopefully not, one of the noisiest aircraft of its size that I know of. Even through a decent headset that scream from the air intake is still audible in flight.

As this thread is still going I’ll jump in again.

24th May, 2007 is the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Midland Aircraft Preservation Society – now known as ………?

Roger Smith.

Hey, Moocher, you can`t add Christ to the list cos a: He didn`t do a lot of flying, and b: we celebrate him every year, it`s called Christmas!! 😀

Gotcha!

There’s also Sputnik 1, launched on October 4 1957. Even though I was just 5at the time, I twiddled the family radio in the hope of picking up the bleeps from above. The Liverpool Echo carried the memorable headline “Russian satellite is 500 miles above Crosby” – nothing like getting the local angle!

William

I remember that, my old man did the same thing and fiddled with the radio when it flew over Nottingham, we had no light pollution in those days, only gas lamps and those wierd, dainty electric street lights with the square cut glass reflectors, so you got a good view of it passing over.
As I mentioned earlier 1957 was the launch of Hornby Dublo’s Bristol Castle, a ground breaking piece of model engineering, it only flew however when it fell off the layout that we had mounted on a base board, still works though.

Dec.17, 2007 with mark the 60th anniversary of the first flight of the Boeing B-47.

An aerodynamically groundbreaking aircraft (with a nod to the German research..still the Boeing engineers had their work cut out for them beacuse it was only 5-6 years before they were trying to get the B-17 combat ready) that went onto have a large production run and significant operational career.

“50th anniversary of the first flight of Saunders-Roe SR.53 XD145” A subject dear to my heart. I never thought when I attended my first airshow at Farnborough in 1957, and saw the beast fly, that something over 20 years later I would be involved in restoring it for the RAF Museum.

SIR FRANK WHITTLE … The centenary of the birth of Sir Frank Whittle … Haven’t heard of any plans yet to mark this occasion

The following is a little early for an anniversary talk. It’s a lecture cut from the London Society of Air Britain’s website – http://www.air-britain.com/

WEDNESDAY 13th December 2006. The life and times of Sir Frank Whittle

Roy Fowkes, who is presenting this lecture, was an apprentice at Power Jets and worked with Sir Frank and presents a personal insight into the life and work of one of aviations greatest pioneers.

I dont think you will get a C-130 line up at RIAT but there might be some interesting stuff celebrating the USAF 60th aniversary. They have already got the Thunderbirds display team!
Heres hoping for some other heritage flight guys comming over as well as Glacier girl.

My first and last visit to a Syerston Airshow, getting a cowboy outfit for my 7th birthday including twin leather holsters for my Colt 45 cap guns, made by Lone Star, one was silver and one gold, I even had a leather pouch to put the caps in.The backside on the trousers split very quickly and I never wore the damn thing in public anyway, I looked like Alan Ladd in Shane except probably taller, sorry Alan, probably one of the best cowboy films ever made. Goodbye Shane!!!
We also got the Hornby Dublo ‘Bristol Castle’ for Xmas that year as well, which I’ve still got and I think it was the year of my first trip to Grantham trainspotting.
Does this count.
Went to Southsea for my hols that year and saw the Vanguard, the last Battleship, moored up at Portsmouth, I also definately remember watching a Sunderland fly along the coast and remember seeing the Princess flying boats coccooned off Calshott following a trip by boat to Southampton Docks.
