As Middlebrook wrote : ‘In its aim this raid was typical of hundreds carried out during the war but in its execution it met almost all the difficulties and dangers which enemy defences and the weather could between them produce . These and a measure of bad luck combined to turn a routine operation into a tragedy .’
It is indeed a sobering thought that almost 100 bombers failed to return – almost 700 aircrew ……..
