Another airfield at risk?

Breaking news in the East Midlands region today is the possible sale of Nottingham Airport @ at Tollerton. The link below [sorry for the lengthy url] explains most of what may be happening very soon.

People associated with the airfield have known about the sale for some time.

I know there has been a lot of activity ‘behind the scenes’ from parties interested in buying the airfield and maintaining it as such. I was also led to believe that there is a covenant on the airfield, which prevented it being built on for 20 years, but don’t quote me on this.

What it really needs is some proper investment to make it a first class GA field, with Nottingham only 10 minutes away I really think the airfield could attract more business traffic. There is also plenty of derelict land around the airfield which could be redeveloped in to light industrial use.

None the less it is still unsettling to the people with businesses and aircraft based here. The vintage aircraft parts and restoration business I am associated with (not my business, just Quality Manager) is really starting to get going, and with some really exciting plans for the future which we need to be based at an airfield for!

Some slightly differing views appearing on local TV this evening and the PFA have already put up a spokesperson.

The housing issue has been doing the rounds in the area for a while now, with a couple of successful local campaigns to stop the Rushcliffe Council developing other local green-belt areas. Ultimately it all heads back down to parliament [Two Jags] and the issue of airfields being classed as ‘brown field land’. I can sense some lobbying coming on!

Wessex Boy – I hear what you say about JP’s Auster Aiglet but not so sure about ‘his business?’

Yet another council looking to make a ‘quick buck’ and sod the greenbelt and our aviation heritage. It’s depressing, and against the might of the councils and wealhy developers it is hard to get our voice heard.

Sad, very very sad.

Roy.

That’s a shame, I visited there for the first time late last year and was impressed with the diversity of aviation industry and the resident aircraft.
I don’t think that Joe Petroni will be impressed with having to relocate his Auster or business!

Twin Otter,

I am (ashamed to say) not familar with this site but if what is said in the new article turns out to be correct, I and many other airfield enthusiast never will be either!

A rather depressing prospect. I know not everything can be ‘moth balled’ but yet again we see a distinct part of a regions heritage disappear. If it were a ‘genuine’ archaelogocal site, there’d be uproar.

I really sympathise.

Chris
