The orange Catalina, which has been resident at North Weald for several years, is now in the hangar being readied for a ferry flight to Israel.
They were washing off all the grime and gunge at the weekend, and the paintwork doesn’t look bad at all now.
The props, carbs and mags are being replaced, and they reckon the work will be finished by the end of the month.
Sad to see her go, but at least she wil fly again – a couple of test flights, then about 25 hours on the ferry flight itself.
At least we’ve got some interesting aircraft arriving to replace her!
The pic shows her parked outside and sheltering various jets.

No photos of G-DEMH then? shame.
Nice to see JJ with her guns installed and the new aerial, getting better all the time.

And take off. A bit blurred, but you don’t get much warning!

Close up of the Tucano in 72 Squadron markings
By: YakRider - 18th April 2004 at 00:08
The Tucanos were there for the 72 Squadron Reunion, which was taking place at the Squadron. Nice to see so many veterans around. The Tucanos are due to fly back to Linton first thing on Monday morning.
Peter Teichman also had Jumpin Jacques flying and Maxi Gainza took up his Yak 11 late afternoon. He was telling me that his Yak 3UA should be ready for testing at the beginning of May, and he is confident he can get the CAA to agree the paperwork.
A good day at North Weald.
Some pics to follow…

Had a look at the Catalina today, all jacked up in the hanger and looking a whole lot better, wheels off, fabric surfaces off and an army of engineers working on it, the plan looks to be to get it finished in 2 or 3 weeks and ferry it to Israel.
As an aside, anyone know what the 2 Tucano’s were at North Weald for today? Unfortunately I couldn’t stop long enough to have a coffee in the Squadron to find out.

Any idea when the Gannet will move from Chatham? I had read somewhere else that it had already moved, but I didn’t believe it as I didn’t read it here!

I’m very pleased to see that something is being done with the Catalina at last, I spent a number of hours at Biggin Hill preparing it for the flight to North Weald and was horrified to see it sitting next to the B25 earlier this year and was hoping that a better fate awaited it

i thought there was 2 catalinas at NW, 1 was sold to The Fighter Factory in the US, the other one is the orange example?

Re:
Apart from the Cosford and Duxford examples, the Catalinas in this country look very uncertain. There are at least 3 at North Weald?
What happened to the crazy idea of buying a flying Catalina to sell it and raise funds to repair the very bad shape ex Duxford example? That idea seemed daft enough to suggest using it for spares.

No sh*t! When is this supposed to take place? And what is this all about? The last I’ve heard of it was back in 1998 when a Catalina was supposed to show up for the IDF/AF 50th anniversary events and to reside in the IDF/AF Museum.
Any details would be most welcome!

Sorry to ask, but what kind of interesting aircraft are going to replace this Cat?
