These shots were taken at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian in central Washington on 14th April.
A sunny spring Sunday with the trees in full blossom is not the ideal day to visit…it was packed, with seldom a chance to get a clear shot free of visitors. Indeed the Spitfire was never in clear view during the afternoon I was there.
Light levels are low and many of the aircraft are not particularly photographer friendly..so basically just record shots.

Great photos Mark. Thanks for posting them. Have to agree with your comment on the Spitfire color> Very insipid. Not sure I’d have left her as she was though.
.
The Spitfire – Well not exactly as it was, but cleaned and tidied with perhaps a wash of something to bring a bit of lustre back to the surface finish.
Look at the P-61 Black Widow at Udvar-Hazy. Various previous markings showing through. I like that.

Now a question.
All those suspended aircraft…………do they get dusted? If so, how and how often? They don’t appear to be able to be lowered.

…and finally the Spitfire.
Whilst the paint and livery on the Hurricane at Udvar-Hazy looks fine, the Spitfire just does not quite do it for me. I think it is the ‘green’.

The Smithsonian policy now seems to be to preserve the original paint. If only they had left it as I first saw it in 1972.
