dark light

Another garage clear out – too good to scrap?

Hi everyone,

With Newark’s Aeroboot looming, I’ve been having an annual sort out of the darkest corners of the garage (“that keeps on giving”) and a few mystery bits and pieces have come to light.

They are mainly parts I’ve picked up somewhere along the way over the last forty years but they don’t form part of my main collecting themes, hence they’ve been put on a shelf and forgotten about. I’ve taken a few snaps and hope Forum members may be able to shed some light on them. I fear that some of this stuff may end up at the tip rather than Newark in the absence of positive identification, but let’s see what we can establish anyway.

Any assistance will be much appreciated, as always!

Item 1 is identified in that it is a compressor with Stores Ref. 37G/1251, but I don’t have the relevant A.P. so any info regarding type, and engine/airframe combinations that used it will be appreciated.

Item 2 is a hand pump. It looks American to me but I could be wrong. There’s not much to go on by ways of part numbers, etc except what can be seen in the photos. Is it a standard item or unique to type?

Item 3 is an American hand pump, Type D-3 according to the label. This one looks to be a standard item? Any idea as to types it was fitted to?

Item 4 is a Rotax Starter, 24v, Type C4602. What types used this item, please?

More to follow!

I just thought I’d bump this thread back up again in case any more identifications are forthcoming. A number of the bits have moved on but a few are still defying recognition.

I’ve been looking at item 18 again and have done a bit of a clean up which has revealed some useful info. It appears the casting was made by Birmingham Alloys Casting Co. “BIRMAL” and the part number appears to be a Hobson one. I’ve taken a couple of extra photos in case they help pin it down.

Meanwhile, here’s one item that definitely won’t be in the garage much longer. It came from a yard which contained mostly aircraft scrap and when I first saw it I thought it might be part of an electrically powered gun turret. I always felt the small and badly corroded plate would contain some info and I’ve finally got around to cleaning it as gently as I can. Enough detail came out to enable me to google for it and the very first return led me to this:-

http://www.buyexmilitarysurplus.co.uk/products/CAV-Switch-Board-Compensated-Voltage-Control-System-Type-186%252d1.html

It’s apparently from a Scammell lorry and a new one will set you back £65. Don’t think I’ll bother taking this one to Beaulieu!

Thanks for all the useful suggestions.

I would have recognised it as probably being part of a Blackburn Beverley yoke – so not as rare or interesting as I’d hoped!

How is the poor Beverley yoke not interesting? And if you are intending to re-locate it to your bin/local canal…!

Just a quick update. One of the benefits of creating threads like this is that it forces me to look again at stuff previously filed away under “unrecognised”. If I’d turned the photo of item 17 upside down, I would have recognised it as probably being part of a Blackburn Beverley yoke – so not as rare or interesting as I’d hoped!

Battle, yes, the lever shown as item 19 is the type fitted to early Ansons. It is actually a standard Dunlop item, offered as one of a number of options for operating their brake systems.

Firstly, thanks again for all the continuing replies. Taking advantage of a still reasonably light evening, I’ve just taken a few more snaps of oddities that I’d like your views on.

So, item 15 is yet another pump. This one is an Integral Type 183 Mk.5, Stores Ref. (looks like) 37J/1248. Once again, views on airframe/engine combinations would be welcome.

Item 16, yet another pump! This one is a Dowty Liveline with Stores Ref. 37J/821, I don’t think this one has ever been used as it appears to be coated in protective grease.

Item 17 appears to be part of a yoke, but not one I can recall seeing before. The Vulcanite covering looks to be standard Dunlop. Any yoke gurus reading this thread?

Item 18. I feel I ought to recognise this but I cannot bring it to mind. Seen one somewhere before though!

Item 19 is a small hand operated lever. I think I know what this is but I’d like your views. I think it’s pre-war.

Item 20. Two very similar sets of levers. Again, I’m sure I’ve seen them somewhere but I just cannot recall where!

All suggestions welcomed and for all of you who have been in touch, I’ll reply in due course. Please be patient.

Item 12 looks bl**dy old. Possibly WW1 or an inter-war item. Probably off a small aircraft with limited air/fuel/hyd requirement.

Items 13 and 14 appear to be pretty much standard hyd pumps used on everything from powering flaps to u/c’s to turrets. From the medium and larger types from Hurricanes to Lancasters (and everything in between!).

Anon.

#6 is Beaufort and possibly early Beaufighter, certainly Beaufort, for memory a hydraulic sequencing valve to do with the undercarriage. Got a box of them stored away somewhere 🙂

Sorta think that :

Item 1 is RAE air compressor from early WW2, more generally replaced by the Heywood type compressor.
Item 2 is bilge pump, may be Catalina or Sunderland or for emptying your Key inbox…
Item 9 is an EP ram that does have the whiff of Mosquito about it…a similar three way EP ram is used to contol shutter on air intake for Desert Equipment, two way version may be for Oil Dilution valve.

I would like the Rotax starter for Cheetah and the EP rams, but am 5,000 miles away…do you do a buy & hold service in the Garage That Keeps On Giving, so that things can be kept on the shelf until a wheelbarrow load is accumulated that can then be picked up as a job lot by a delivery van?

Item 9 are Electro-Pneumatic Valves Type ES/A/98 24v d.c. Max Air Pressure 350 lb./sq. in. My hopes were probably raised by seeing “98”. Any ideas?

I think these might be Shackleton, part of the camera bay door system.

Thanks for the replies so far, they’ve already identified a fair number of the mystery items. Well done!

Here’s a few more I missed out yesterday.

Item 12 appears to be a small compressor of some kind. It’s about 7″ tall. Not much in the way of markings on it other than what you can see in the photo.

Item(s) 13 are Hydraulic Pumps, Type IH Mk 1A, Stores Ref. 37J/510. In that sense, they are already identified but I’d appreciate any info regarding engine/airframe applications for them.

Ditto with regards to item(s) 14 which are Hydraulic Pumps, Type IHC Mk. 1A Stores Ref. 37J/512.

Item 2 looks like a bilge pump.
Item 3 is a wobble pump/fuel filter assembly, usually found attached to the engine mount of one of the many NAA T-6 variants. 🙂

Identities for items 4&5

Hi Alan,

Item 4 is a starter for Gipsy Queen 70 (and probably others) which according to the info should incorporate a drive for the propeller feathering pump.

Item 5 is a Fairey filter unit. The company is still going but under the United Technologies Corporation brand of Claverham. http://www.claverham.com/history.html

Hope that’s of some use in deciding where they may end up!

Regards

Dave

Item 7 is fuel control block for Dh Ghost (Sea Venom?).

Item 10 the lower two bits are (I think) Rolls Royce Nene (Seahawk?).
