I read with sadness in our local paper , that Sqaudron leader tommy Broom had passed away tuesday morning, aged 96 a Man who Volounteered to fight against the fascists in the spanish civil war, and later with the RAF , who survived 80 missions , who also evaded capture for 1500 miles over land to escape the clutches of the gestapo.
He was awarded the DFC three times , one of his greatest feats was with Air Marshal Ivor Broom.. ( his good friend ) was the low level raid against the german rail tunnel at Kaiserslauten, which cut off eight german divisions from resupply.
He flew in Havocs, and mainly Mosquito aircraft, and the two were know as the “Flying Broomsticks” .
I knew the man personally ,he was allways in the poacher pub on a saturday lunchtime, with his pint of bitter , a real Gentleman, with his RAF Moustache, and twinkle in his eye, such a jolly man to speak to . I personally will miss the old devil, Portishead , wont be the same without him,
I remember last time i spoke to him, He said “ahh yes.. your Grandfather,… ..Well ive allways known Donald, But I was More friendly with your Great Grandfather, …… 😮
It was surreal to talk of my great grand father as he had died in the early 1980s, and to have a man talk to me all about him who used to play cricket etc with him in the 1920s-30s ,, was well, quite a amazing talk for myself.
well, I raise my pint of bitter Glass to you Tom.. Heres to your memory .

A true hero , may he rest in peace.
As quickly & sadly as we are losing those great men from World War Two , we must be approaching the time when there will be no one left of those who recognised the evil of Fascism before most Governments did and went to fight the good fight with only a wish to do the right thing .
