I have finally scanned my pictures taken in 1996. They are posted on Webshots and ready for you to view. Enjoy!
Canadian Warplane Heritage – 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547439001ZXCNwU
This was a transition year for the CWH. The moved from their original hangers at the Mount Hope airport into the current model building. This album includes pictures taken in both buildings.
Indiana National Guard, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA – 16 February 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547437621dSbWtn
When in Indianapolis on business I stopped by the Indiana National Guard and found a F-101 parked on what used to be one of the runways. Apparently this one is now in the Air Park at Grissom AFB. It was in very rough shape when I photographed it.
Ottawa International Airport, ON, Canada – 29 April 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547442065kAFKyD
There isn’t much in this album except for a few poor quality pictures of a two-engined Convair propliner. It is thought this airframe was impounded after an unsuccessful drug running flight from Columbia to Canada. I haven’t had the time to look any further into this yet.
Memorial Military Museum, Campbellford, ON, Canada – 8 June 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547442163IIFivz
Here are some pictures from the Memorial Military Museaum. This is a private informal collection of airframes some, in decent shape, other not doing so well. My favorite is the CF-100 Mk 2. The Canso and Expeditor hulks are interesting as well.
Hamilton International Air Show, ON, Canada – 15 June 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547437626IyjLLI
Apparently Hamilton wasn’t what is used to be, even in 1996, but I enjoyed the show. This was my first time to photograph the CWH Firefly and the MATS Connie (now in South Korea). I also got some shots of the CWH Vampire basking in the sun and a Luftwaffe F-4 pointing the afterburners in my direction. I tried to take a picture, but it was hard with the kerosene filled wind in my face!
National Capital Air Show, Ottawa, ON, Canada
http://community.webshots.com/album/547440277FwRHcI
Not much in terms of warbirds at this show. Bummer.
Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, MI, USA – 16 July 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547436833IDZpiz
While on vacation I stopped by the Henry Ford Museum. There were a few classic aircraft in the true sense of the word. I actually was looking at the original Sikorsky VS-300 (or at least the last version of it rebuilt by Sikorsky).
Grissom AFB Air Park, Indiana, USA – 17 July 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547436835SVUqrP
While on my way to Dayton, I made a stop by Grissom AFB to photograph the aircraft in the airpark there. Apparently I was into doing walk-around photos at the time, and I got some good close-ups of the KC-97.
Dayton International Air & Trade Show, OH, USA – 18 July 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547436837NLVkbN
Not very many warbirds at this show in 1996. There was an early model T-34 there (for which I still don’t have an ID). The Air Zoo F7F put on a nice flying display. It was also the first and only show where I was able to get close-up pictures of the C-17.
Wings of Eagles Air Show, Batavia, NY, USA – 17 August 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547438709OxTcbG
This has to be one of the best air show I have ever attended. Who can forget the formation barrel rolls with the F7F and the F-14 Tomcat!?!?!?. Now that was a show!
Mackie Transportation, Oshawa, ON, Canada – 24 August 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547436723oPPJpd
In this album you will find pictures of an Oshawa land mark that is no longer there. For many years there was an A-26 mounted on the roof of a moving company’s building. You will find a few shots in this album.
RCAFA 447 Wing, Mount Hope, ON, Canada – 28 December 1996
http://community.webshots.com/album/547436725qBWJgc
And finally you will find a few pictures of the pylon mounted CF-100 at the Mount Hope airport, just down the road from the CWH.

Mike

Good question. I am not sure which aircraft in the collection are maintained airworthy these days. I’ll see if I can find out.
This might help with the question about what flies at the CWH at Mount Hope, Ontario, Canada. I aksed Steve Tournay who lives in near-by Hamilton. He replied…
“Bobcat”? My, aren’t we the Yank today! 🙂 I’m hardly ever up at the
Hope anymore, but far as I know the flyers for ’06 are the same as last
year:Lancaster
Canso
Firefly
Harvard
Stearman
Fury (Sandy T’s, not actually a CWH aircraft)These plus perhaps the Beech 18. My understanding is that the DC-3 was
down most of last year. The Crane (Bobcat) was restored over a period
of nine years (1977-86) by Harry Smith and crew and first flew again in
fall 1986; it’s still nominally airworthy but I’m not sure how long
it’s been since it actually flew. Same general situation goes for most
of the other trainers. Far cry from the days when they had 40 airplanes
and all but the ones not completed yet were regularly flying…S.
I replied to steve…
Would you mind if I past your reply into the thread?
And Steve responded…
Wouldn’t mind at all; you can even keep in the smartass remark about being a Yank, if you like! 😉 BTW I may have forgotten one flyer, the “new” (ex-Hank Dielwart) Chipmunk may have been active last year and with 2006 being the 60th anniversary for the Chippie, I’d bet they’ll have C-FBXK on the go this year too…
Of course there’s also the Lysander, but who knows when that will fly.
S.
So it looks like the Cessna Crane is not a flyer this year. Of course the best thing to do is to send the CWH and email if you want to be sure.

Very nice, especially the one of the Cessna Bobcat at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum – isn’t she now airworthy?

Thats quite a body of work there-no wonder it took ten years to scan them!
You are welcome!
I liked the Swordfish at Tilsonberg. Was it one of from the Ernie Simmons cache, coming home?
I hadn’t actually thought of it that way, but yes it was. You must be referring to the Tillsonburg show in 1994. It is a good venue for a small show. Too bad they stopped having them after 1994.
BTW… If you are interested in another Ernie Simmons Swordfish picture you can find some taken at the Canada Aviation Museum starting with this one…
