Another veteran departs

I have just learned that my friend Flight Lieutenant Doug Turner DFC has sadly passed away after a short illness.

Doug flew the Mosquito variant with the 6-pounder gun with 618 Squadron, and sank a U-boat with it in March 1944 – the first person to do so. His story is in the long out-of-print book “Most Secret Squadron” which was written by his navigator Des Curtis.

RIP Doug.

The Legacy they leave behind…

As the last few posts show, at least as these wonderful men pass away they leave us with a wealth of documented evidence, both of their courage and service, and of the sacrifice of their gallant friends who didn’t survive.

“The trouble with being one of the few, is the way we keep getting fewer…”

With grateful thanks from a member of the post-war generation.

Thanks for the kind messages, which I will pass on to Doug’s on.

I was able to record an interview with him about his amazing flying career not long before he died. The ultimate aim is to make this available on CD, along with the 80-odd other veteran recordings completed so far. I think it is so important to be able to capture these chaps thoughts in sound while we still can.

that is a fantastic tribute – I’ve read a few of the “forgotten voices” series along similar lines, good luck and congratulations on the project to keep the memories and voices alive.

Farewell, Sir, I didn’t know you but your generation, and the generation before that fought in the ‘Great War’, were simply the best that this nation has produced.
