Thanks Alan, it looks really close to how this would be installed. I tried a search for cockpit pictures of the sabre loong down from above or in front looking back to id the gunsught but no such luck. Thanks again!!

I think you have the right of it there. The patent for the A4 reads:
AN AIRCRAFT GUNSIGHT INCLUDING A PIVOTALLY MOUNTED REFLECTOR PLATE
The part clearly has a pilot mount. The gunsight was a heavy bit of kit and one of the things that Korean era US pilots complained about with their heavily laden machines trying to deal with the nimble Migs. I heard of these being stripped out in an attempt to even the playing field and replaced with a simple fixed point sighting reference.

I am certain that it is a Sabre’s gun sight reflector.
The link below shows a stripped out cockpit and you can see there the stainless pins would sit and there appears to be a catch or similar where there is notch at the sharp end of the triangle.
And I think this clinches it,

Thansk for the help guys, hopefully someone can pin it down to what it is and aircraft type.

Alan,
If you’re right about this being a Canadair part then could this be a camera port from a reconnaissance version of a Canadair Sabre? I don’t know what the Canadian version would be called, but a North American version would be a RF-86A or RF-86F, and they had 3 camera ports on the underside of the fuselage. When I first saw this part I thought of the RF-84 Thunderflash because we have 2 of them on display near me, but after looking at some pictures I decided that wasn’t it. Certainly looks to be the right size for a camera port.

The inspectors stamp looks like a Canadair one (I have only ever known them use that stylised C), and 172 ##### is seen on Sabre parts, so now out with the diagrams of Sabres.

Reminds me of this pic of a B-17E’s tail gunner position, but it appears to be from another American bomber. It’s not a B-24, B-25, B-26, or TBF Avenger either.

Thanks Tony
Andy it could be although not sure. Too big for a hud display. Would be great to find out what it is!

US part number, not sure which airframes.
Is it a part of a turret fire control system?

There are some numbers on both sides new pics attached. Almost forgot, there is only one piece of glass the triangles openings are not glassed at all.

Is it the right way up?
By: Phantom Phil - 21st April 2010 at 15:16
Is it not part of the aiming devise from an aircraft gun turret? On either side are a pivot bar to move horizontally to vertically!?

Now I’ve enlarged it – didn’t work last time. That is meaty glass, for sure. Definitely not a HUD unit. But what…………?
By: Peter - 21st April 2010 at 14:34
There are two triagular sections of what appears to be armored glass fitted. The central triangle section is missing,
By: Red Hunter - 21st April 2010 at 14:32
The metalwork seems a bit heavy for a HUD. Are the two triangular sections glazed, or is it just framework? – it is not easy to see from the photo.

Yes no prizes for the wheel id. Serious bit of kit this framework and glass though?
By: Red Hunter - 21st April 2010 at 14:28
And I’ll bet there area few here who could identify the wheel it is leaning against………..
