The Melbourne Herald Sun
THE Ansett name is to fly again – as a regional carrier in north Queensland.
A Townsville businessman has registered the name and hopes to launch passenger and freight services by August.
Terry Byrt has even adapted the old Ansett logo and red, black and white colours used by the airline in the late 1960s.
The new carrier will be formed by merging existing small carriers and the purchase of five 50-seat Fokker Friendships.
Mr Byrt said he was using the Ansett name “because everyone knows what it is”.
Mr Byrt, with a background in mining and fishing, has formed a private consortium backed by $20 million funding.
“It’s no joke and we haven’t treated it like that,” he said.
The names Ansett Airways, Ansett Air Freight and Ansett Airways Holdings were registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission five weeks ago.
“We’ve purchased five existing airlines in charter and RPT (regular public transport) operations. Just small ones,” Mr Byrt said.
One of the airlines already holds a flying licence for high-density flights, he said.
The contracts would be settled after regulatory approval, Mr Byrt said.
Former Ansett staff had already contacted him with their opinions about the proposal, he said.
“A lot of them are saying, ‘Congratulations, it’ll be great to see the Ansett name back in the air’.
“Others are a bit more sceptical. We don’t propose to be anywhere near the size of Ansett.”
Mr Byrt said he hoped the carrier would fly routes to Gladstone, Mackay, Hamilton Island, Townsville, Mt Isa, Cairns, Brisbane and Horn Island in the Torres Strait.
Ansett, founded by Sir Reginald Ansett in 1936, collapsed in September 2001 with huge debts.

It was always the airline my family flew when it was AN and QF competing, it would be good to see this airline expand to what ansett used to be in the domestic market, i doubt it will expand to that capacity as the market has changed dramatically but you can dream 🙂

Ansett Airways
I think this effort (Ansett Airways) will not last long. I can see immediate problems with passing off here. As far as I can make out, Mr Byrt is not associated with Ansett but soon will be – defending himself. The administrators of the former great airline would have a compelling case for putting this idea out of its misery.
The “Ansett” trademark is clearly the property of Ansett Australia and this is evident from a trademark search.
I did some research on the ASIC website in Australia following some comments that were made in another forum and have found another company that had the Ansett Limited name, though it wasn’t connected with Ansett Australia either and it has since become RMA Gold Airways Limited anyway. Presumably the “RMA” stands for Reginald Myles Ansett. Anyway they have a website at www.flygold.com They seemed to be fairly advanced and I made a quick call to the company managing the development to learn that former Ansett people were behind it. I can understand, therefore, why Mr Byrt’s Ansett Airways would not and could not be an “Ansett”. If anything, Gold Airways would be bestowed with that honour, surely. They do have the ex Ansett people after all.
On the subject of new airlines, I have a sneaking suspicion that something is happening with Skywest that will see it expanding east to the Queensland coast. My guess is that the time is right for an expansion consuming operators such as Alliance and Rex. It’s been suggested that Gold Airways might be behind it as it, according to the coffeeshop gossip, is spending a lot of time to get its fleet size and sectors positioned for a start in November 2006. Has anyone heard anything along those lines?

They’re are talking about Fokker 50’s which were still being delivered new to airlines up until Fokker’s collapse in 1997, so there is still some fairly new airframes about
Well now that makes a world of difference!!! Pitty I was rather looking forward to flying on an old F-27 once again.
I painted a few of the ANSETT Fokker F27,s when i worked at at Fokker in the 70’s
Lucky Bugger!!!
ANSETT also had a few F28’s
Yeah they sure did, then they went to East West, and then to Air Nuigini.
Also saw the F50’s being painted
That would have been in the Mid 80’s and in the new Blue and White colours, these too went to East West but then Ansett bought them back and used them under Kendell at the time Kendell bought the CRJ-145’s which were sent back a few months later due to the sale. IIRC those F-50’s are now serving in Adelaide with the local charter over there but a couple made their way out of Australia.

[QUOTE=Ja Worsley]That old F-27 was the first plane I ever flew on, that same one, wow. This is all great news but one wonders why he’s going back to the old F-27’s. There aren’t any in Australia now so he’ll have to get them from over seas, most will be near their end of airframe life and I don’t think that zero houring is going to be an option on these ships. And IIRC there are new laws regarding use of old engines, and I think the old Darts fall under that catagory sadly.

In any case, if he can pull this off, I want to be one of the first on a flight, I don’t care how safe it is, if I die, I’ll die happy doing the thing I love most in a plane that started it all for me!

Sandy,
Nice, but not the right colours. If you read the article, they’re gonna use the old red/black/white colours from the ’60s.
Presumably, either http://www.airliners.net/open.file/168118/L/ (how cool will that be??? 🙂 ) or http://www.airliners.net/open.file/168114/L/

When they say the old red white and black colours, they’re referring to the late sixties and early seventies livery
By: Bmused55 - 5th May 2005 at 23:33
I didn’t intend it as a snipe at all – I did say “nice”, and I merely wanted to point out that the livery you chose to reproduce on the Fk.50 wasn’t the one the new Ansett were saying they were going to use.
Andy
I realise that now…

for some reason regarded your comment as a snipe at me
