Anson Survivors (Zombie from 2004)

JDK has put me in a ‘survivors’ mood, and after I read through the Flypast that Daz was looking for with the Charles Church Mk 5 in it, I saw a picture of the Annie down at Maes Artro nr Llanbedr.

A few years ago, I almost started looking for an Anson project, having got fed up with seeing very poorly examples in various places around the country. After I discovered that one had recently been scrapped, one sold elsewhere, and one would not be sold, I gave up. Probably just as well – I dont know where I would have put it anyway!

Still, I have a soft spot for them, and wonder the state of some of the survivors some ten years after my original ‘quest’. So, can anyone help with some pics and information please?

Might even get me interested in rescuing one again!

Bruce

Here’s the four Ansons sitting at Harry Whereatt’s farm near Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, taken 15 September 2005.

In about 1971-72, Kemps Aerial Surveys sold a fleet of around four Anson 19s to the Sir William Roberts Collection. As a snotty nosed teenager, I blagged a ride on one of them (G-AHIC I think), up to Strathallen. I seem to think there was a Hudson or Ventura delivered at about the same time. Any idea what happened to them?

The Jet Age Museum’s Anson has left Gloucestershire Airport. No idea where it went to.

The report I read said it went to a group in (West?) Wales who had won a lottery grant.

Anson History

Hello All
Can anybody supply some information on WD413 (G-VROE) as to its colour scheme(s)?
In 1998 it was operating in a blue and white RAF Transport Command scheme which, by 2001 had changed to all over silver with yellow fuselage bands.
Are these schemes authentic and, if so, what is the unit represented by them?
I’d be very grateful for any information.
All the best, and MTIA.
Dave

When I was a kid (coff coff) in the 50’s my dad was

a mate of of one of the guys who ran a feeder airline called Brain and Brown which flew to the islands in Bass Strait (in Australia between Victoria and Tasmania) which had several surplus Ansons.

I got to crawl all over the old Mk1s they used and I still remember how cramped the bomb aimer position in the nose was.

G-AGPG taken in the Hangar at Hooton Park in August 2004. At least she’s under cover!

VM325 has been outside at Gloucestershire Airport for over 2 years, although may have moved in the last few weeks. I’ll check when I go to work today.

There was a dismantled but complete T19/21 in a hangar at Little Staughton in the late seventies/early eighties.Have no idea who owned it,what it was doing there or where it went. Was still in RAF colors, but it was fairly dark in there and I never took a pic of it..or made a note of the serial.
Anyone know anything about it or if it survived ?

Yes, it was TX226 currently with Air Atlantique for spares usage.

Hi David, got that serial from European W&W. The point is the Dutch Navy used the early marks in WW2. This one now at the Aviodrome has zero worth for us. That’s why it will not join the collection but held for exchanche. If it could be rebuilded into an early mark, it should have Dutch value. As it arrived in Holland flying ( at least I was told that), and has always been indoors since, it is a potential flyer I guess. But anyway, it is available for interested parties if they have something interesting in return. BW Roger

Roger -the machine at Leystad is a C.19 which went out to Holland at the end of the 1960’s -I cannot remember the serial but it’s different to the one quoted in FP.
As for rebuilding it as an early mark – I cannot see why it would justify the effort. They are interesting enough as C.19’s – it would just end up as a hybrid
with little significance. For your interest VH-BAF which used to be in Australia
is a MK.1 rebuilt with the centre section ,wings and tail feathers of a C.19
to keep her in the air in the 1960’s when most Mk.1’s were grounded . I believe ‘BAF’is now in N.Z under rebuild to fly.

I wonder, is it possible to remade a (static) T19 or T21 into a mk 1 ? BW Roger

There are many Anson remains left in Australia although most are now in the hands of collectors etc, but none are likely to be recoverable to airworthy given the massive task of the wooden wing.

And if you want one, there is an Anson available for collection exchanche in Holland. It is complete and has been indoors since its arrival in Holland around 1969.
