To try and clarify the mixed answers that are being given here:

Yes, statistically speaking the back is marginally safer than the front or mid-section.

I’ve heard it posited that sitting over the wing spar is a good spot too as it’s one of the strongest parts of the airframe – but, clearly, good luck on the day is the most important factor.

Funnily enough, I always head to the rear on flights without allocated seats – I’m 6′ 4″ so I like emergency exit rows too.

Wasn’t there a study, after Manchester and other crashes involving evacuations, that concluded 7 was the golden number?

ie: the chances of people sitting more than 7 rows away from an emergency exit getting out were the lowest of everyone aboard – makes sense really.

2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight

Yes..upon boarding the aircraft walk up and down the aisle until you see a pretty blonde..she will most definitely be sitting on the black box..so theoretically that’s the safest and strongest part of the fuselage :diablo:

2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight

To try and clarify the mixed answers that are being given here:

Yes, statistically speaking the back is marginally safer than the front or mid-section. This is because the rest of the plane takes the impact in the event of a head-on collision with an object, and the very rear section is structurally very strong because it needs to hold up the tail.
However, it is a very marginal statistic, and there have been plenty of incidents where the tail section has been by far the worst place to sit. There is simply no way of knowing, and quite frankly you’d be better off not thinking about it and choosing whichever seat takes your fancy. 😀

1/ Depends on the damage (if any) that the bird causes
2/ Statistics have revealed that…smoking is the biggest cause of statistics! No! You just gotta be lucky IMHO. Fly less, and you will have a lower probability of ending up in kit form.
3/ Once again statistics say yes.
4/ No, it is real. And a pain in the a$$ because sometimes they suspend the drinks trolley.

Lemme guess…You are about to go on a flight, and your mother-in-law has quoted you an article from a contemporary magazine? :diablo:

1/ If a plane injests bird/s does it have to land asap or does the pilot have choice of whether to carry on to destination

The engine is designed to withstand a bird strike. If the bird damages the core of the engine the EGT will rise and the engine will start to vibrate. Biggles will have no choice!

2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight

No

3/ Is it true the cruise is safer than take off and landing

At take off and landing you are close to the ground, THAT is were flying is dangerous. At 35,000ft, there are no mountains, no tall buildings and the ground is far away.Happy days

4/Is clear air turbulence a media invention

Turbulance from other aircraft, the jetstream call it what you will bounce around a bit some times.

the reason i ask is a guy has joined another holl website i use and saying he is a pilot and has started a fear of flying thread

Crap pilot ain’t he!! Our man Deno would say that flying is fine (Said with respect, please don’t hit me!)

2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight

The inside is definitely a safer place to sit during flight than the outside.

Joking apart, I think he’s spinning you a line.

3/ Is it true the cruise is safer than take off and landing

Statistically, yes. Of all the fatal accidents from 1959 to 2008, 25% occurred during the landing phase of the flight.

(See http://www.planecrashinfo.com/cause.htm)

4/Is clear air turbulence a media invention

No, it really does exist. As the name suggests, it is encountered in clear air (clear of clouds) and can result in violent up and downdrafts.

1/ If a plane injests bird/s does it have to land asap or does the pilot have choice of whether to carry on to destination

How would the crew know? The only way the flight crew could tell if there had been a bird ingestion would be if some of the readings went out of limits. If they do, then they have no choice but to do a precautionary landing

2/ Is their a safer area to sit on a plane for a flight

The back. No aircraft has ever reversed into a mountain

Yes.

4/Is clear air turbulence a media invention

No

Im no expert but this is what i think

1- I guess if the engines are damaged then yes but if everything seems to be ok and there are No Alerts or Structure damage then why Not carry on.

2 – Id say the safest place would be where the Exits are But No matter what happens you will be in the same situation as everyone else.

i cant really comment on the others
