Any aircraft owners out there

Hi all,

Just looking to source info on aircraft ownership.

After paying insurance, general maintenance (excluding engine fund) and parking fees, what sort of return are you looking for, per month/year and at what rate do you charge the club who uses the plane (if that is the way you operate your aircraft).

I understand that during the winter months use will be limited and that during the summer hopefully things will be better.

What sort of back up (in money terms) do you usually run with. Obviously until the plane is being used I won’t have a huge reserve….is this a bad idea…thinking that if no one uses the plane i’m going to be left with paying parking fees etc with no income! 😮

The person who is selling the aircraft has said he makes circa 11k per year profit! Does that sound reasonable.I guess it must fly around 220+ hours per year.

Cheers DME.

perhaps you know him? Same name as me, Peter and same bald head, but no beard!

So, you share the same head with your son. Hmmmm. Does he have it alternate days or do you do half a week each?

Where do you keep the beard when he is using the head?

The world needs to know.

dakota2, I think you mean South Scarle, not far north of Newark, which is where my son flies his RC aircraft – perhaps you know him? Same name as me, Peter and same bald head, but no beard!

Do keep up Dakota.

This thread is about leasing your aircraft to flying clubs. You seem to be selfishly keeping yours to yourself.

See you in Le Touquet next spring?

Moggy

PS: Where do you fly yours? We have a group of modellers on our strip. Splendid chaps by and large.

Hi Moggy,
The Lincolnshire Aeromodellers as we are called (other things at times) fly from a private grass airstrip situated in South Scale Lincolnshire the owner rents it out to us at a fee and we also keep his strip nicely mown. We do allow visitors to fly here with permission. 😎

Sorry chaps I find that owning aircraft is quite reasonable!!!!!
I have a “Super 60” and a “Skycat” in my garden shed (Hangar) which makes rent non existent . My fuel bills are quite low as one is powered by a 600 geared electric motor
and the other by a .19cu.in diesel (or rather compression ignition engine) the fuel being made up of one third paraffin, one third oil, and one third ether with a conta piston to vary the compression. They are controlled with a 6 channel 35mhz radio and give great pleasure flying them. I have managed to do this since the 50’s.
I am a flyer with my feet on the ground!!!!! they get taken to the flying field by car and my insurance is included in my club fees. How about that!

Thats interesting!!

I’ll have to speak to him and clear a few things up.

I was intending to run it as a business. If you’ve got the info to hand, how many hours does the AA5 run per year.

Thanks

The engine would probably be £12k for 2000 hours, £6/hr, 1200 hours means a fund of £7200. If the aircraft is doing 220 hours, there is 100, 150 and 200 hours checks also.
Not forgetting aircraft also go wrong, and at 220 hours per year, almost certainly other faults need repair.
My friend has an AA5 he rents to a flying school (run as a business, so has to book the a/c for himself and pay for the rental, albeit reduced!), and reckons it just about pays for the a/c. And needs a good year to actually make a profit.

YAK139

He has gotten another aircraft (a chipmunk) and wants to concentrate on this…it is also at another airfield. I can’t seem to see any other reason as well, I mean why give up £11k per year. Obviously I will have to look at the books etc to verify that the £11k is accurate

Costs that I can envisage are engine fund (engine has 1200 on it so just past half life), parking fees, it’s at an international airport, insurance, 50hr check, annual and star annual, there will probably be more i.e. tyres, bulbs, strobes etc.

The £11k profit is including putting by an engine fund, but he must have had that fund going for some time now hence the relatively low contribution per year, so I guess I may have to add a larger amount per year in order to buy the new engine when it does go pop!

If he is making £11K per year, why would he want to sell?

Excluding engine fund, what else is excluded to get the profit mentioned?
