Some WW2 military Ariels used similar steel chaincase covers when aluminium was at a premium.
That teardrop design over the engine sprocket was used by Triumph and Ariel…

I’d say Matchless myself.

It is a bike primary cover, the round / jagged hole at the left of the image seems to be non standard or a damaged area, originally I don’t think there would be a hole there, the vertical “slot” in the middle is for the footrest, the upper centre hole would have had a cap / seal and is for adding oil.
The image here is not the same part, its a 1946 Triumph 3T cover and is in alloy, but shows a similar design.

Got to go with Dr Starangelove on this one, as the 2 round holes and the oval ones wouldnt hold any oil for any possible chaindrive/oil bath, as there are no holes over which a cover could be screwed.

difficult to make out but its a pre 1950/55`s pressed steel chaincase. you have the outer part. the other half would be up against the crankcase and the 2 parts held together by a steel or ally band or by a series of screws as with yours with a rubber or cork (leaky) seal inbetween. its similar to AJS/MATCHLESS
from about 1955 onwards the leaks got a little less

Looks more like something off a piece of agricultural equipment to me, drive chain cover off a gang mower or such like?

Looks rather like a BSA to me.
