Any Corsair buffs here? Help needed please :)

I am in the process of starting a Corsair 3D model and initially I set up the Vought drawings (green). Then I found these a bit inaccurate, and set up Paul Matt’s drawings instead (red).
Now I just received these Japanese drawings and they’re different altogether again! Much skinnier! The difference looks trivial maybe, but once it’s all 3D, it’s not. I want to develop all major Corsair variants from my initial F4U-1A/D, so I need to have a near-perfect base to start from.

Can anybody please tell me… what is the most accurate one?!

If you have better ones, that’d be awesome too!

Thanks heaps in advance! 😀

Just caught this thread so perhaps a bit late, but let me mention the 3/4″-1.0′ drawings of the F4U-4 by
ER Atkins that were made available by SUPERSCALE of Arlington, TX in the mid-1950s- early 1060s.
The drawings are in two sheets, dated 07/01/56. They are actual blueprints.

Superscale offered some remarkably detailed and accurate blueprints, my favorite being that of the P-38. Offhand, the
series included the Spitfire Mk I, Me109G, A6M Zero, B-26, the F4U, the P-38 and P-47, among others.
They’re all in 3/4″ to the foot scale.

Really magnificent Ronnie! I wish my r/c models were half as good as your digital ones. I would love to have a hi-res copy of that first pic for wallpaper on my PC.

Yes, and even met Greg “Pappy” Boyington several years before his death. I have a personally signed copy of his autobiography from him. As a matter of fact I’ve met a number of Corsair Ace’s over the years.

Having worked on this on and off since 2005, I can at last call this model 99.9% done! I still have to add a few smaller details on the engine and the aileron trim system, but that’s about it!

The current colour scheme is that of an FG-1A of VMF-114 during this unit’s stay at Peleliu, where it carried out close air support and napalm strikes.

Once the last few tidbits are added, I’ll do some proper action renders of it.

By the way, did you manage to create the little panel on top op the wing that opens when the wing folds?

Yep, definitely did – two of them 🙂

Google directed me towards my own post, while searching for some Corsair photos. Crikey this is old…

Good news though… there’s a fair chance I might actually finish this one this year at last! 🙂

This is what it looked like last time I worked on it, a few years ago already… time flies…

Also: http://digitalaviationart.com/skyraider3d/corsair_wip.htm

It badly needs finishing!

PS. I have no need anymore for any Corsair references (unless you see glaring errors in my model!) as I have so much stuff collected by now I could almost build a real one! 😀

It did lose from itself though 😀

Yes, two F4U-1D’s were lost to a F4U-5NL…………Sorry, but I don’t think that counts!:p

Clearly, Corsair vs Mustang, Yak, and Mig…………….the Corsair was always Victorious!:D

Maybe one with three kill markings? (i.e. two Corsairs & one Mustang):D

Thanks Scooter!

QldSpitty, your project looks mighty impressive! Many hours of hard work for sure!

Been awhile since I updated this post! Some progress in the meantime…

Firstly an animation showing all the cooling flaps in place and working…

http://skyraider3d.military-meshes.com/images/F4U/F4U-1D_wip08.jpg

Then the wings… It was very tricky to get the seam to have the right shape as the real thing (drawings are always a let-down). In fact the only way to get the seam correct was to get the folding animation right, as it almost perfectly follows the airfoil shape once folded.

http://skyraider3d.military-meshes.com/images/F4U/F4U-1D_wip09_anim.jpg

NB. For those with sharp eyes… outer flaps are currently not installed (working on that at the moment…) and inner flaps haven’t been cut out yet.

Here’s a higher resolution image:

Merry Christmas everyone!

VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE!:D

What’s next a F4U-4C?:diablo:
