Here’s a challenge (or maybe not, knowing what some of you guys are capable of) Someone has asked if I can identify a Spitfire they have a model of. The only info I have is “Writing on the side reads HN R DH 571.” Done a search on here and Google, and come up with nowt. Any takers?

Hi VoyTech,
Re Spitfire: HN R DH 571 Squadron code:
HN used by 93 Sqn Spitfire VB’s June 1942 and 20 Sqn Spitfire VIII & XIV in Far East until June 1946.
DG689 – DJ700 All were Avro 652A Anson I/IV. Serial DH not used.
Cheers Brian.

Just a hypothesis: JK271 (Mk VC Trop) was used in 93 Sqn, apparently. If the markings for the model were based on an unclear photo, by someone with no knowledge of Spitfire serials, this could be the answer.

DH### was never used to apparently to save confusion with Dehavilland using DH. It is like not using I and O as it could be confused with 1 and 0.

No Spitfire had a serial beginning with a DH. The last with the letter B was BS559 and then there is a gap to EE600. These are Mk.V:s.

I’d hazard a guess that the serial has been made up, possibly using someone’s initials & a number that was significant to them. The use of ‘HN’ as the squadron code might be significant as it was used on Spitfires.
Could we be looking for someone with the initials D.H. whose last three were ‘571’ & served on either 93 or 20 sqns?
I’d like to see the model, which would help a lot, as would knowing if it was a home made model, or a kit etc.
Geoff.

The code HN was used by 93 (not 39) Sqn which was reformed at Andreas in mid-42 with Spitfires and also by 20 Sqn in the far east which had Spit VIIIs (and XIVs?) postwar. None of which alters the fact that DH571 aint a valid Spitfire Serial No. (or at least not a RAF one).

Just quickly before you go. What Mk is it, how big is it and what colour is it. I may be completely up the wrong tree but I keep seeing an Indian connection?

Many thanks for the replies folks. Going to be offline for a couple of days, so please understand if I can’t respond/thank anyone else then. Have a good weekend all.

Could that be squadron code HN “R”, serial DH571?
Over to the experts!

According to my old RAF Aircraft DA100-DZ999, the batch DG689 to DJ700 was allocated to Avro Ansons. However, there is a gap between DG987 and DJ103.
