Stopped off at Sywell today as I was passing and they seem to be clearing an area next to the museum site. They had a JCB and tractor trailer in removing a layer of top soil and had surveyors gear out. Any body have any info. Thanks

While I will not add to what has been said here, other than relax and chill out gents….
I will point to some other forums that deal with current military and something’s that are posted on there with seemingly no thought to who might be looking at them!
It does get rather amusing given many have taken to one of the other forums who seem to think I’m a spotter I have a right to know what is coming to ……. Next month. And then turn round and criticise the RAF for not actually laying on facilities for the masses (like when a certain Canadian aircraft visited)

Morning, Stuart.
I guess it’s a case of ‘think before pressing send/post’.
It’s certainly the case that the use of texting and emails makes it difficult at times to get tone across.
I hold to my view, at least in thinking the response could have been more reasonably couched, but you’re right that those words, if for example, accompanied by a roguish (!) grin might have felt much more sympathetic. Trouble is, no roguish grins on t’interweb.
I still hope we haven’t seen the last of Blue Max.

hi,
been following this thread, seeing where it would go, and if I may a couple of observation’s, first in my view a perfect reasonable question, if passing the museum and you see work being carried out is the museum expanding?, but I must say both replies by TBM, were very abrupt and condescending, as post 6 say’s “those that know” syndrome come’s into play. Now the toy’s are out of the pram, and could we be waiting to see how many rush to pick them up?.
If question’s can’t be asked without being shouted down, intimidated, and having to apply for a freedom of information, then what’s the use of a forum? why can’t you ask a question, then anyone who know’s the answer reply? If we stop asking the question’s, them in the know won’t be able to tell us what they know!
just my personal view, regard’s,
jack…

Hi Mike, it was in the reading of the reply that I saw a different view, maybe even playful; this is the basic problem with the internet, we can’t easily impart the feeling that have in our heads into a typed word or sentence, I personally don’t use the emocion things, and as a result can fall into the same category, of being misunderstood (oh lord please don’t let me be).
As for the general feeling that there is a cliqué on this forum, that’s probably true, as some have been members since 2000, much longer than me, and of course many knew each other before becoming forum members; I’m not part of that cliqué, and it doesn’t bother me, it’s worth remembering that many forum members don’t post at all some rarely, but they read it all the same.
Some members have more questions than answers, some know much more than they let on, the forum needs both, it’s inevitable that those in the know are sometimes economical with their replies, having been asked the same question many times over.

Hmm…so Blue Max has taken umbrage. I’m sad about that; as I said in my early post I am quite new round here and a simple trawl through past threads tells me that he is not. I can see his point of view but I am afraid I still maintain that his response to the OP was impolite. That single sentence, if uttered as spoken word, would have sounded as I suggested it did in post 4. It doesn’t read too well either.
There were so many better ways to answer the OP, especially since the information requested appears to be in the public domain.
I hope we have not seen the last of Blue Max.

Blue Max, bearing in mind that anyone has, by law, the right to object to any new planning application we certainly have the right to know about this development. However when you say you won’t be coming here again I hope you just mean this thread, and not the whole forum.

Certainly have, over the last few years I find this forum less and less of a place that’s nice to be. I simply asked why the need to know? A simple response of ” I was just curious” just may have got an answer, but no everyone just launches into a personal attack., curiosity it may be, however the opinion these days that there is a right to know all that is going on with things that may or may not concern you I find quite distasteful.
The reaction here when a question is raised of why the need to know is quite telling. Not to worry I won’t be coming here again, bye.

Good grief, the OP asked a simple question – where did the ‘right to know’ thing come from…??
Your answer says more about you than it ever will about the OP…
Not to worry I won’t be coming here again, bye.
Please close the door on the way out…

Blue Max,
As the current ‘Thread Killer’, I am possibly the last person you wish to hear from.
Unfortunately, ‘need to know’ is in reality only required for items subject to the ‘Official Secrets Act’. I should know I first signed it nearly 50 years ago.
Too many people are so sensitive to anything they believe is not in keeping of their perception of what should or should not be devolved.
The OP asked a highly relevant question on a forum that is renowned for its experts with intimate knowledge.
Unfortunately your reply, for whatever reason, seemed to be at odds with what this forum usually delivers.
IMHO it may be time to take a deep breath, and return with your normally erudite knowledge to assist us all.

Max, I was just curious, as you may have guessed from my response was wondering if it was for an extension to the museum. Really enjoy coming to the airfield during the week as well as the weekends.

OK so I think he’s got the message, let’s not forget he is and has been a valued contributor to this forum over the years.

Texantomcat, ( my favourite u.s. aircraft but does have to have a black tail with white skull and crossbones on it ) any update on expansion ideas plans. I do remember your post before Xmas looking for buildings that could be transported to your site. I do realise the airfield owner has a business to run, but one of positives is that you can get in for free have something to eat or drink and see some flying as well as visiting your museum.
Hi Hartmann,
Thanks for your post. Well, as ever its all about the bucks! Our grand plan was to consider a wooden sectional building pretty much along the Air Min Hutting line for the next phase of expansion but so far not found any going spare! Nissen hut expansion is always an option, we know how to do it but the concrete raft is a killer, cost wise. A hangar was mooted but the Hunter is our advertising billboard (30% increase in visitors since she arrived!) so if we cover her up whilst good conservation wise is bad for visitor numbers…
Next plan is to repaint the Hunter, we had been exploring other options but that is favourite. One of our members has pretty much restored the cockpit (of which there was about 85% to begin with!) and we have even installed the original ECKO radar and gun camera…. once the bang seat is finished then we will do the exterior. Its our first airframe so its been a learning process for us. The Canberra is going great guns, more systems come alive in her each week and she is about 95% complete now. We are working out how to give our visitors access to her whilst protecting her from damage.
So, expansion wise, we are building up reserves and it will be some time before we can afford to take things further. As we are not a charity but a non-incorporated Charitable Trust we don’t qualify for many grants and as we don’t own the land (much like the LPG at Brunty) we can’t qualify for an HLF grant – so we do it ourselves and it just takes time!
Look out for some internal changes soon though, we have a lovely sectioned AS Lynx aeroengine which will be out on display soon, opposite the AS Sapphire which is also sectioned on loan from TAC.
Thanks for your support 🙂

And why by chance do you need to know ??

“you know because you need to know!”
“I see one of those on a need to know basis things, like one of those James Bond films”

I’ll never forget a similar response (from probably someone else) when someone enquired about the Hurricane that had turned up at Biggin Hill a couple of years ago!
I remember thinking that nobody who reads this site could just ignore a Hurricane and not want to know where it came from!

And why by chance do you need to know ??
You’re doing a grand job of promoting the Sywell Airshow with that attitude!

It is certainly a great little museum, I agree Hartmann.
Cheers Mr S – should said hi when you called in! We have a kettle and everything!

Which is precisely why my participation on this forum in 11 years has been so low. Some of the members and their responses to queries are appalling at times.
Hear, Hear to both statements

Because he is probably curious and curiosity forms the basis of a lot of enquiries on this forum. If you’re going to ask him that now why not ask of it anyone who has a question.
What a miserable response.
