Any info gratefully recieved

Contrail watching with my first cuppa at around 1015hrs this a.m when saw following:

Boeing 707 heading in S.E direction slightly lower than other traffic as no trail. I was using 20-100X70 zoom “bins” tripod mounted. No AWACS radar visible.
Nothing related picked up on scanner.

Anyone any ideas….Thanks.

I wonder why those things that look like internal cowl flaps are there on the engine?
I saw an AWACS with original 707 engines at Coxyde (Koksijde) on july 3. It flew over the runway, didn’t land. It was returning from Istanbul and wanted to come and show off, so we were lucky. Smoky!

Aw shucks guys!! Now I’m not sure. Looking at it from directly underneath and at that alt it could have been either of these. Maybe it was the Israeli, if it had come from PIK I think that it would have been higher than it was when overhead me a few miles from STN. Thanks again folks.

Possibly Omega Air refuelling tanker which is contracted to refuel US air force aircraft routing back to US from Gulf region ?

It’s been at Prestwick several times lately too. Or alternatively a US Air Force KC-135 ?

Or the Israeli one?

There was an Israeli Air Force 707 in MAN at the back-end of this last week…

Thanks Shamrock, but definately not an A340. Ren I think you may have solved it as the engine cowlings had the grey front end as per your pic, these really stood out due to high level of illumination to the underside of the aircraft against the pure blue sky. As we see quite a few KC135s going into MHZ over here I knew it wasn’t one of those, saw an ATA Tristar 500 going into there yesterday, and neither was it an AWACS….Cheers mate.
