I was just wondering what the gen was on Ed Russell’s collection at Niagra South, Ontario.
Also, are there any photos of MK912’s marking changes? (I believe Ed wanted a rather more personal touch to some of the badges worn).
TIA

Yeah – I was right (2 posts before). The german pilot Walter Eichhorn had flown Ed Russell’s Me 109E on the 12th and 13th of May.
As you can see (and hear) on the Homepage of Walter’s T6-Team:
http://www.t6-team.de/news.htm
The text says:
18/05/05: Now here are some pics and a video of the Bf-109 E in Canada.
The penetrating on the 12th and 13th of May was successful – only a little ‘fine tuning’ was necessary. Walter says that, although this plane has a ‘weaker’ engine, there is no difference to the Bf-109 G6, because it is lighter.
Surprisingly stalling is a bit more agressive. The plane reached approx. 470km/h in normal flight direction with medium power!
Luckily Walter was allowed to fly three times with the Spitfire while engineers did the 109-finetuning. He describes the flight characteristics as very comfortable, only the control force at the aileron during a flight of a roll were comparatively high compared with the 109.
Now have fun with the video – click the red box “Film: Bf-109E von Ed Russell”… 😉

I was advised earlier this year that John Romain would soon be undertaking flight testing of the 109 for Ed Russell. This was a few months ago so it may be outdated intelligence.

The german pilot Walter Eichhorn
(flying the Messerschmidt/Hispano “G-6” D-FMBB and “G-10” D-FDME of “Messerschmidt-Stiftung” in Manching, Germany / the “Hispano Aviacion H.A. 1112 M-1-L” D-FWME from MAC, Albstadt/Degerfeld, Germany (test-flights) / “Canadian Car & Foundry Co. AT-6F” D-FHGK from his “T6-Team” and “Aero L-29 Delfin”, G-DLFN)
made a trip to Toronto at the 10th of may doing some test-flights with a 109 near Niagara-Falls. I think this could be only one 109…!

I had the good fortune to meet Ed R. at DX when he took delivery of his Spit. What a nice man and a genuine enthusiast to boot…

Sorry DaveM2, I am away from my Classic Wings collection right now and there was so much excellent detail in your articles my memory can’t recall where each and every one is without consulting them. I shall be sure to look it out again when I get a chance – your efforts are appreciated.
Mark 12, I didn’t like that taste of that soap and now I’m coughing bubbles. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Is that a real flyable ME109E? Or just another Buchon conversion?
Jeez
Sometimes I wonder why I spend hours researching and writing ‘Luftwaffe Survivor’ lists

Oh yes it’s real……109E Werke No. 3579 and was even flown during the Battle of Britain by Hans Joachim Marseille IIRC.
Charlie Brown did the intial test flying at Chino for Dave Price.

Ed Russell Collection.
…and there was me thinking it was all a ‘great sham’.

I think what he means is that it’s a shame this beautifully restored aircraft isn’t on view much to the general public.

Why is it a shame that Ed keeps “his” machine to himself and friends?
Where’s your collection that you’ll share with us??
As an owner and having paid for it all myself I am somewhat defensive about the ‘armchair brigade’ complaining about this and colour schemes etc…..

Thanks for those additions MK959. It’s good to see that the spit is still alive and running.
Great sham that Mr Russel wants to keep his toys to himself. Having recently visted the CWM at Hamilton I would have thought that its location would have been far more approperiat place to keep his collection.

I would like to see it more often too. But its already a big relieve that she still looks so fine. 🙂

Thanks for those pics. I seem to recall reading that the Bf109E was going to be used in the making of Pearl Harbor, up against the Planes of Fame Spitfire XIV!! (not making this up!)

As and when the prop returns to Niagara Falls from maintenance the Hurricane will be close to flying.
