Any Spiteful Bits?

Does anyone know if any Spiteful bits still exist?

Hmm the gears are turning.

If it was possible to procure. How about finding a spare set of Attacker wings, sit down with a ruler and a pencil and measure everything up?As Mark 12 states it is only engineering. To think Mitchell and the others started with a Merlin on a stand and a guy in a seat behind it to create the Spitfire. No computers,3D software, emails or other hi tech CNC machinery.Just a lot of guys with pencils, math skills and a dream of something grand.;)

Was it actually any good or was the NAA XP 51-G the same thing virtually but better?

Apparently Type 371 was (unusually) given to the laminar flow wing, later applied as the type number for all things Spiteful. The Attacker had a Type 371 wing.

It is just engineering.

Still, an interesting question: Where the wings on Seafangs virtually the same as those on the Attackers, i.e. interchangeable, and therefore could they be Seafang wings (re)used on the Attacker or newly built wings for the Attacker alone?

Well not interchangeable as such, radiators not required etc, but developed from and presumably could be retro modified back to Seafang design status.

Probably more work than it looks…but well worth it.:)

I should imagine that the Attacker wings were built specifically for the type.
In the age of fullfilling government contracts Vickers wouldn’t have found much margin in salvaging bits off Seafangs.

thanx for the entertaining replies! Please note I am not planning to ‘do’ a Spiteful…just interested! I certainly would not support or suggest that people use an Attacker to recreate a Spiteful.:)

Nor would I,

But the type has so many similarities to it’s older brother the Spitfire, the current industry wouldn’t be too taxed to build one provided sufficient funding would be found? The engine installation is also similar to the Griffon powered Spit. The prototype Spitful was a high back Mk XIV with the new wings.

It should really be done

After all, the Spiteful is the missing link between the end of the prop era and the beginning of the jet-age?

Cheers

Does anyone know of any Attackers in existence other than the Yeovilton aircraft? Pakistan?

AFAIK the Attackers in Pakistan share a hangar with the Chinese Stirling and the Spitfires buried in Burma!

Constant rumours, but no substance (yet…). Given the “extinct” Italian type (Romeo Ro39?) that turned up in Kabul anything is possible, but I wouldn’t bet your mortgage on it.

Cue

“Attackers are important aircraft in their own right and if one is found it shouldn’t be parted out to make a reproduction/replica Spiteful or Seafang”

Presumably if you can find the laminar flow wings, the rest is relatively “easy” The tail unit is pure late mark Spitfire, the fuselage is late mark Spitfire with raised cockpit area

Well I’ve got the Volume I, but I doubt it would be much use. One of the slimmer tomes in my collection. I get the impression that whoever wrote it lost interest before finishing the job!
