Just wondered if anybody was planning to be airbourne at midnight tomorrow? I would love to but I have copious amounts of champagne to drink and no night rating anyway!

Well I definitely wasn’t the first to fly in the new year but I may have been the coldest:
Monewden, Suffolk to Earls Colne and return, outbound was into a 25 knot headwind, no surprise that the trip back took half the time. OAT was 3deg, open cockpit with wind chill made it bl**dy freezing. Coldest hour airborne in a long time brrrrr – but the viz was fabulous…!!

Can I claim the earliest take off in 2005…off blocks at 0002 on the first of Jan!

“r” can we please nominate a far-off place for you to go to – and stay?
Like Ormond Beach Aviation?

Great photo of two lovely aeroplanes, Melvyn, but I REALLY like the car between them!
Had one once. Instead of frittering away my ‘light alloy’ bowler (well Golden it certainly wasn’t, and Silver still a bit over the top; but they did give me a little handshake when I left the RAF) on the mortgage, or clothing my children, I bought a 2nd hand Plus 4 four seater, thinking it would be the ideal family car. I loved it, wife, small daughter and dog hated it unless it was sitting looking pretty in the drive! Had to change it when elder daughter produced No 1 grandson (now 30!), and the carrycot wouldn’t fit.
That one belongs to Paul who owns the Staggerwing. It is quite funny as both he and Ian Logan, who owns the Airmaster parked on the other side of the hangar, have to bring their cars to Popham from London if they want to wash them as both cannot do that on the street outise where they live.
Paul is also having a 1969 Bonneville restored (again after it was ‘restored’ once) and has just got a Velocette Thruxton. Add to this the airfield managers (D1ck Richardson) BSA and Vincent Comet and my PFA inspector’s 1937 Norton and it can get quite fun.
But I digress; this is supposed to be all about flying over new years eve. Nor me neither, but I might have once upon a time.
Flying? On this forum?
And I like spattersons NYE menu, almost up to Oz barbie and a couple of bottles of red standard!
A rather muted Happy New Year to all this year, in view of recent events, but good luck to all nonetheless.
Tim
Thanks Tim, I think you and Patty would get on fine. He is not a bad bloke for an American although I would never say that in public.
Happy New Year

I used to have a share in a Vagabond there. Can’t remember if it was in that hangar or the next one up.
Most probably the next one up. Hanger One has a Vag. and so does hanger three although hanger three is not that old. The Popham flying group one is ALIJ (I think) and BVCB is in Hanger One.

If you really must know…
We must we must
At midnight the manager and the sommelier come out and sabre several magnums, much to the delight of the crowd.
If you can say “Sabre Several Magnums” at the end of the evening then I do not believe you would have drunk the stuff listed!
Have a good New Year Patty.

Flying during new year – nice idea. I’ve just got my Night Qual and have not sent my log book away yet, so I can’t take any passengers up yet – be a bit lonely up there myself on New Year!!
I’m in Glasgow and was thinking about flying over to Ireland in early March, but if anybody would like to meet up down south (no, not OZ.) then i’d be interested to hear from you. When down I’d like to spend two days, just flying around and enjoying some nice beer!

Your a sad little man… with nothing better to do than sl*g people off like me, people who are going further than you in life!
I have told you not to reply to my posts!
I wasn’t aware that you had the power of censorship Robert.

I will see if I can make it myself, 2005 should be my most prospurus and memorable year with the gain of my NPPL at Coventry, and FAA CPL in America with O.B.A with some luck.
Only one snag with the first part of that plan — Popham is unlicensed, so as a student you won’t be allowed in.
Coventry’s a bit out of the way for me if going to Popham, and anyway somebody else has already been volunteered to try to close the door, otherwise I’d take you for a ride.

Here then is the dinner menu. The sixth course is the cheese trolly, of course (I’ll have the Stilton in your honor, Bridget).
New Year’s Eve 2004
~ Menu ~
Maine Lobster “Pot Pie”
celery, carrots, potatoes and fresh herbs
~
Red & Yellow Beet Carpaccio
micro arugula and pancetta vinaigrette
~
Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras
oatmeal crisp and cider glaze
~
Rosemary Roasted Veal Loin
chestnut polenta and buttery carrots
~
Dark Chocolate & Honey Timbale
honey~mandarin compote
Of course we’ll kick things off with a few cocktails (yes, the have Lagavulin Scotch), then a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne, followed by a nice Bordeaux or California Meritage. A snifter of Remy XO is my preferred after dinner drink. At midnight the manager and the sommelier come out and sabre several magnums, much to the delight of the crowd.
So, Indian Ocean for the Jonses?

I realize now my comments on the J-3 thread will make no sense, as I confused R.weaver with Rover 73 (who does help with volunteer work at Old Warden, including cleaning the antique aeroplanes with Robbo, Bridget, etc.)
Really, someone needs to publish a directory with photos and bios and stuff like that…it’s getting crowded in here.
Oh, and on the topic of New Year’s Eve I shall be flying through several bottles of Champagne and a six course dinner with Mrs. P at our favorite restaurant.
No, not McDonalds, Mr. Hiscock.
Arbey’s????? Taco Bell??? Dairy Queen???

Laughted my pants off.
R, do you really believe this? Do you have multible book titles to your name? Do you have an aircraft that has taken 12 years to restore in a hangar somewhere? Do you even have a PPL to your name?
I can answer the last question for you. According to your postings on here, you don’t
Maybe Melv is a sad little man in your eyes, but he has gone further in live than you will ever go with that attitude 😡
All I can say is, grow up R. When you have matured a little, in about three years time, come back and share your indefinate wisdom with us.
