Anyone Any Good With Dog Tags?

A near neighbour found this dog tag and USAAF button in their garden whilst digging out the foundations for an extension and is looking to find out more about them!?

Many thanks for the replies everyone, some very interesting info there.

It was found very close to the house which was built pre war (WW2) and is a mere stones throw from the home of the 339th FG at Fowlmere.
Is there a way of finding out if Duff Arnett was part of the 339th?

I’ve also advised the owner to contact the museum at Fowlmere to see if they can help.

In case it helps, I have a dog tag from a 1950’s USAF airman and it has the notch, so not necessarily WW2.

A slight correction to the previous reply…the number on a WWII-era tag would be a Service (Serial) number, not a Social Security number which were introduced in the 1960s…and is a nine digit number.

The button is generic Army (that’s the emblem of the War Department, now Department of Defense)…not necessarily USAAF, so the owner may not have been an airman.

Not being a uniform expert, I don’t know if AAF uniforms had the familiar AAC/AAF winged emblem with star and circle.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit…rmy_Air_Forces
However, I would not think so since the Service Dress uniform was issued Army-wide and the AAF was part of the Army.
Any uniform experts feel free to correct me, I’d like to know.

The notch shows where it was held in the stamping machine and firmly dates it in the WW2 era. The other info shows last and first names, social security number, year of Tetanus shot (T43) and religious persuasion Protestant (P) and Blood Group (A) (they hadn’t figured out negative & positives then). The US Army Air Force button shield would have been part of the whole dog tag set. I’m sure there’s someone out there who can trace the man concerned for you. Hope this helps.
