Since there seems to be soooooo many Dutch on this forum, I was wondering if anyone was from Nijmegen, because I going their in the summer for the 4 day Marches, as part of the British Military contingent. I was wondering, what is it like, this will be my first time, also what beers do you recommend, ’cause on Friday my team are hitting the Bars/pubs/clubs etc
Baz
P.S. anyone else doing the marches?
P.P.S. thanks to all the Dutch guys who praised the UK in the ‘national price’ post, against the ungrateful B*****d at the start!

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
Sadly I’m not going, sounds great though, but it has never come up at our squadron. Ahh yellow bird, nice way to round off a night ex!! I know jonny was a paratrooper, but havent yet sung it. Our squadron usually does Walking through Chelsea. Also I believe they learnt Nobby Hall off AC2000.
Dunno about tht other one you mentioned.

If you think Oranjeboom is disgusting Arthur, have you ever tried Orval??? That doesn’t even taste like beer. It tastes like either of these two things – recycled stomach contents or the oral polio vaccine I had when I was 15 (without the customary sugar lump).

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
As the whole of Nijmegen is one great party after the march, you wouldn’t have a problem with amusing yourself. It really is fabulous.
As for beers, you should stay away from:
– Oranjeboom. Disgusting.
– Leeuw. Somehow, your kidneys hurt the day after drinking this. Tastes good though.
– Lindeboom. Not too good, unless you want to spend the next day sitting on the toilet.
Good ones are Brand (very good actually) and Grolsch. Heineken and Amstel are brewed with Amsterdam canal water }>, no further comment on those.

Arthur

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
Hi,
I’ve lived in Nijmegen for half a year, but that was some 5 years ago. I didn’t go out much then because I spent most my weekends with my girlfriend at home. But anyway, my favourite would be the Rockcafe, as I’m a heavy metal fan.
Nijmegen is a university town, with lots of students obviously. They are the ones that go to the pubs mostly, so most of the pubs reflect that. Most of the nice pubs are in the centre of Nijmegen, so that would be your best bet for fun.
Check out this link:
http://www.kroegenweb.nl/nijmegen.php
It’s in Dutch (sorry couldn’t find a English language site), but maybe you can make some sense out of it. Anyway it has a nice map of the centre of the city, with 3 pub visiting routes displayed. Also the names of some pubs can be found there, along with some info. One can look at pictures of the pubs, so you might get a feel for the ‘ambiance’.
Nijmegen has some discos and dancings as well, Extravaganza is generally said to be the best. Doornroosje should be nice as well. Adresses of other dancings can be found here:

Have fun in Nijmegen!!
Best regards,
Ference.

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
Dutchy – only posting the names of a few Dutch beers that I know, it’ll be easier to get those beers in Holland than it is here. As for the Belgian types, I don’t know if Dutch bars sell them or not, they were suggestions more than anything:-)

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
James, I’m ATC too! Are you going in the military contingent or are you going as a civilian? + what wing are you from? I’m going with the Edinburgh and South Scotland Wing, but having trouble with numbers! + have you done your qualifier yet? It was killer, or Flt Sgt got it totally wrong, instead of 50 miles in two days, we done 64! my feet were raw! Howz your training going? About the songs, ‘Jonny jumped from a thousand feet’ is my favourite, but ‘yellow bird’ and ‘lady in red’ are also good!

RE: Anyone from Nijmegen?
Beer – Oranjeboom, Grolsch, La Trappe (quite a strong one at around 9% if you go for the Tripel), Heineken, any Belgian types you can find (Sloeber is heavenly, but avoid Orval and Duvel as they don’t taste like beer at all but more like sick).
