Hi James
No, they are both in the UK. I didn’t want to jump in as you had asked Andy the question, but if he doesn’t get back to you drop me a PM. One should be at Flying Legends again this year.

Hi Andy

Can you let me know who has the Hercules engines please? I’d like to see if I can get some sound recording of such an engine for my Stirling animation!

Cheers
James

As far as I know in the UK at the moment the following piston aero engines are kept running by enthusiastic owners,

10 Merlins
3 Griffons
1 P&W radial
1 LeRhone radial
1 Ash radial
2 Bristol Hercules
3 Leonides
1 Napier Lion

Please let me know if I have missed your engine.

Nice photo Andy / Robbo.

Andy, I can think of 7 Merlins currently running on trailers, plus the second trailer at Rolls-Royce, does that have an engine fitted? I`ve lost track of what is out there!
There are several others which have been run or are being set up at present, but not actually useable, plus at least two I have had on trailers which have gone abroad.
I would like to see more unusual types, exemplified by the Lion, such as the Jumo or Russian types, or an R-4360.
There are lots in Sweden, such as at least two Hercules, one Griffon and the late Peter Svensson collection of various unusual mostly radial engines.
There are also at least 4 Merlins running in Australia plus the one with Graham White in Florida, who also has a rare IV1430 plus others.
I think there is a Merlin III in Spain? possibly which runs, and another one on YouTube which appears to be in the USA or Canada.
There`s another running Merlin in the USA with a university, I forget which one.

@Spartuabus: It`s not Mike Oliver`s engine. Mike has two Merlins and a Griffon in running order, but only one Merlin is set up to run, and that one aint it.

I`ve never set up 4 Merlins to run together, quite fancy it though, but the BBMF / Panton Brothers do it far better than I could, however, two Merlins in sync the way Robin and I used to do it sounds amazing.

Hi Anon,

Thank for your interest in the Lion, I have to admit to being very biased but they do run very sweetly, a nice exhaust bark with a hint of bevel drive whirr.

I started it up last week for the first time this year and it roared into life after less than half a crankshaft rotation.

Another great photo from Rob, thanks, hope to see you again in September.

If I had £53,000 I would be able to buy two ground running Merlins and have enough left for fuel to run them
for a good few hours.

Picked one up for a customer last year 9 hours genuine original on its stand ready to connect up and run with Log cards the lot for under £30,000 this isnt expensive its daft money.

A lot more than he paid for it by a good bit.Sometimes I wonder if folks are just getting free insurance valuations instead of seriously wanting to sell things.

Come in, Merlin Pete. Don’t be shy, we know it’s your handiwork:-)

Your Napier Lion is beautiful, Racer2. I recall an old engine fitter telling me they ran like sewing machines, is this true?

My dear chap, it’s British, if it isn’t leaking it’s empty. The EE Lightning was renowned for its short range, it had to burn it rapidly because they leaked so badly.

I did have a spare 53k, however the wife spent it on an extention to the house. The bliddy *^”!)@~ woman!

Tell her your putting in air conditioning, might be a tad noisey, but with the right prop on it it’ll answer all your cooling needs.

Thanks, Andy – I certainly spent longer than intended with them at Duxford and heard some good stories.

Hi charliehunt,

There are a couple of dozen people who ground run aero engines in the UK these days, it is a lot of fun and you always meet interesting people with a good story.

Who are the people who take their piston engines to various shows and events? I have seen them at Legends with a couple of Merlins, a Cheetah, a Griffon and a Hercules, I think. Wonderful sounds!

So Mr Oliver has got bored of his toys, has he?

Actually thinking about it, I thought that this was an asset of the Oliver Merlin Trust? Has he shut it down?
