I found this interesting picture on the web and thought that some of you here might enjoy it. The picture is of a stack of brand new “de-milled” P-38’s in Europe right after the war ended. If only to have a time machine…. 🙂

Fair comment, AJ.
That is true.

I guess if we all put it into context, at the end of the war these really were only instruments of war, no more valuable than a discarded .303 Lee-Enfield Rifle (well, you know what I mean), therefore really only scrap.
By todays standard it would be like the RAF scrapping the GR & F3 Tornados to make room for the Eurofighter Typhoons. No-one would really get misty eyed at Tornados begin cut-up.
Just my 2c worth…

At least, those poor Mustangs have flown for some time before being destroyed.
Thanks for sharing, Martin.

A picture probably taken at the same location (Burtonwood in that case), from the 1988 January issue of the 8th AF News magazine:

Any chance those planes could have been buried instead of destroyed?

Looks like they still have their protective coating applied at the factory prior shipment to the ETO.
What a shame !
