anyone know where i can get a piston engine from??

Hi, all
Ive been looking for a aircraft piston engine to restore to running condition, but apart from cesna engines and the like or you need a mortgage to buy a decent engine.
I just cannot seem to find one
Ive spent many years helping to restore aircraft with a friend who has owned a few, namely a bucker jungmann restored to flying condition from a bucket of bolts.and was last seen flying to germany with AVM Boz Robinson at the controls (was in a past flypast issue) and now undertaking Restoration of a Piston provost WV499 ,which we managed to engine run this past weekend ,was a great sight, cant think how many years the engine had been left idle ,but was impressive to say the least, I havent the room for a whole aircraft, although my friend has said i can keep a whole aircraft at his workshops on a old RAF base in somerset,(hence why i was also looking for a meteor T.7,) but am looking to restore a Dasault Flamont MD312 engine (same as the Argus 411 as used in the FW189/Arado 96 etc ) the engines are the same and were built by the french during the war and many years after .also they are a nice Vee 12. and i believe there are a few “Flamonts” lying around in france ,But who do you contact??, or there is the Hercules engine which would be a bonus ,yet again france has a few derelict Nortulas aircraft that had these engines fitted, but no idea where to find one and my french is a little shaby to say the least, also the biggest problem with a radial is that you need to find one thats NOT seized as if thats happened forget it, as they are almost impossible to strip down for a restoration,
hence why i really am after a Vee 12 ,not bothered what type really but the flamont engine looks the most promising,
any help would be much apreciated from anyone with any addresses etc,or sightings in the back of the hangers somewhere,
many thanks
so i suppose with my project ,it will be whatever turns up first, the meteor or the Power egg,
Chris 😀

thats just it i willl have the money (soon)

as i say above , i am having a re-mortgage and have lots to sell, hence why i was looking at a herc or argus Vee 12 engine will have about 2K for the right one as complete as i can get it.
I also know most people in the A,Archaeology scene so those all rare parts show up from time to time.
I have just sent off for a licence to recover the remains of WV919 (Seahawk)
and remains of WH194 meteor in somerset , hopefully MOD will get back soon.
with a licence for me, I am thinking of starting a group here in Somerset anyone out there interested in AA ?? who is local ?

props

am i right in thinking props are just as pricey as the engine, and then i would have to have them machined down so they can spin in the trailer with the engine ,like you lads in carlilse?
also a hercules would be great because we have the RR heritage trust here in bristol, with all sorts of juicy bits and plans to copy, they helped out (i was the middle man) with finding a original ww2 oil tank for the halifax NA337 in canada, for that wonderful resto, and i saw a couple of extremely battered rusty flame tubes on a site i visited a few year ago probaly still there,If i got a hercules i would want to restore it back to ww2 spec, ie 3 blade prop, and flame dampers etc like the beaufighter had , bristols best fighter, would be a dream for me to show a engine like that at duxford legends like the engine boys do,I was more impressed with that than the aircraft ,as you say a buccaneer static is dead, but a engine lives vibrates and finally growls to life
a real show stopper:diablo:

The best value for money at the moment are Bristol Hercules , assuming you can handle a one ton engine.
Between £1500 and £2000 for a fully inhibited example which still turns (important with a sleeve-valve engine!) depending on whether they are a bare engine or complete powerplant.
PM me if you want the phone number.

The “cheapest” complete Merlin I know of at present is a Hurricane Merlin XX for about £8k.

You can also still get mint Napier Sabres for £1500, in your dreams:eek: Sorry, I`ll go now.

You can do allot with a Meteor and they are a fraction of the price of a Merlin. A could runner will be around the £3K mark. I only have one left and i am keeping it for our next project. There was a place in Scotland that was selling them. check out this link:)

It’s all about perspective……

😮 😮 😮 you mean more than a complete bucanneer!! jeez why are they so expensive?

What can you do with a Bucc?, once you have one all you can do is make it look pretty and sit in it and make jet noises:D .

With prices for a flying Spit running at around or above the 1 million mark then 20k for a merlin plus the re-build cost for flight is cheap in comparrison, IIRC a crated Merln that is certified for flight might set you back a couple of hundred thousand, even that seems cheap when you think of the overall value of a flying Spit.

Regards,

John.

Why don’t you look at a RR Meteor engine (from the Centurion tank). That engine is basically a RR Merlin with the supercharger removed.

They are affordable (used alot in tractor-pull) and can be made to “simulate” a real Merlin (maybe even converted to one).

I know i would love one, if i had the space.
