Anyone Looking For An Insanely Enthusiastic, Mechanically Minded Volunteer?

Preferably around Warwick/Oxford – Anyone in need of a hugely enthusiastic engineering volunteer? Preferably a live aircraft 🙂 Im doing my nut with nothing to take a spanner/socket to 🙁

Well you never know, the Jet Age museum is still working on funding for a new hangar – lots needs restoring there come the day!

Thats sounds like good news, but prefer to do this before I die:D

Arghh, why can’t somebody base themselves in the S.Wales or even Bristol areas?!

… but it would be nice to be part of restoring a complete airframe that is part of a collection that people will see – part of team.

Ever since the loss of the Wales Aircraft Museum at Rhoose and the moving of the historic collection from St Athan (not even a gate guard to look after anymore!), the area has become completely bereft of any sort of aircraft collection.
Unsure why this situation has arisen but it does seem that S.Wales has very little interest in aircraft preservation, it is at least an hour and half drive to the nearest small collection at Kemble, and two hours to the giants of Cosford, Coventry, and Yeovilton.
Given that I live in a fairly central area population wise it does strike me as surprising, epecialy given that there was more going on where I used to live in Cornwall.

I think you are in a better situation Ben, especially with Wellesborne on the doorstep, and being close to the motorways.

I accept some of the points made earlier about buying your own, and I have got a couple of projects which is the only way that I can ensure working on aircraft bits, but it would be nice to be part of restoring a complete airframe that is part of a collection that people will see – part of team.

There’s always our lot, and our Hurricane project – http://www.cbfs.org.uk/

Always happy to talk to anyone who can hold a spanner and not break stuff too often.

anyone that wished to get involved with bruntingthorpe just pop along one sunday when the museums open and have a look around, although the guys on the British Aviation Heritage (ie david walton’s stuff) tend to work on a saturday someone on the sunday will point you in the right direction, they’ll be a loaddown on the first saturday next month more work on the vixen and JP and i think 544’s engine is planned to run, although depends on how much work is left to complete the engine fit

There can be a lot of cross over as a most people will muck in and help with other aircraft if there’s a big job on i know i’ve done bits on the buccs JP’s scout and the victor, but maybe that’s because i’m a currently serving CPL rigger

Ben,
Get yourself a Gas turbine to play with, plenty of fun and work to be had with one. I’ve learnt a hell of alot while working on them and met alot of great people. There is always something to be done with them, I’ve tig’ed up stands and designed fuel systems for engines and had to solve numerous problems and that’s not to mention how much fun it is running them!! There is alot of satisfaction from running an engine properly too and not just wrecking it! Problem is I now have a great yearning to buy an old soviet jet! Check out this site to see the sort of things that can be done

Matt

I can vouch for this Ben, a mate had some of the old Rover turbines (used as fire fighting kit on ships IIRC) we took them on a rig to Bruntingthorpe.

Very loud, very portable, and loads of fun. Did I mention “loud” ?:diablo:

Volunteers

We’d love to have some more help looking after the PT-19 and assisting with our rebuilds, particularly anyone with tin-bashing, machining/milling experience, and experience of component inspection and overhaul procedures. We’re based in Suffolk.

Anyone assisting gets the satisfaction of breathing life back into these old things, not to mention the opportunity to fly in the Cornell and enjoy a few good team BBQ’s.

If anyone is interested drop me a PM.

Cheers,

George

What about the Vulcan guys at Wellesbourne?

Did you have any luck with speaking to the guy that owns Wellesbourne about getting a project located there?

I knew you were clever…!
Would like to take a look over that TT Vixen sometime, the Gannet and Shacks are the real draw for me though.
Distance isn’t the real problem, fuel prices are!

Sorry for invading your post Ben:o, actually my Focus needs a towbar fitting:p
