Looked back at last years and it was working then.
Did anyone notice that the Mk8 had a ram problem with the doors partially open/closed an the wheel poking thru?

The RR 14 had it’s nailed down in the late 40’s
And the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s —

Its the retraction ram itself, which is a pain in the ar$e to fix. I speak from bitter experience!

Its usually a problem with the tail unit itself – seals etc. Most of the flying examples with a retractable tail-wheel seem to have had it fixed down at some point in their careers….

Is the problem due to the length of the lines or not big enough reservoir?

Well i never.
I noticed it,but then i would do as i fixed it like that.
Several Airworthy Spitfires do this from time to time, The Rolls Royce and Freidkin Mk 14s spring to mind.
Heres a link to it happening in service on a Mk 18 of 208 squadron.

A common Fix on Spitfires with a retractable tail wheel.
When the tail wheel actuator by passes internally it is a solution to keep the selector able to trip to idle.
The Hyd. lines are disconnected and blanked.
The doors have a cut out in them and are bolted together.
The mechanical down lock holds the gear down.
Soon as time and new seals allow the gear will be fully retractable again.

Perhaps it was problematic so they converted it to down position only.
Bit like the Hurricanes.
