Anything to photograph in New Zealand

I am off for a few weeks in New Zealand and a few days in Sydney, Australia. (Nov 16 to Dec 11) Is there anything worth lugging my camera gear along there for?

Why would you not want to take your camera gear on a trip like that, irrespective of what you are going to see?

Sights in NZ and Oz

Depending where you are going in New Zealand, certainly lots of sights, aviation and non-aviation worth photographing. If you are going to the South Island of NZ, the RNZAF Museum at Wigram, Christchurch has plenty to photograph both on display and in the restoration/storage hangars, Alpine Fighter Collection at Wanaka, Croydon Aircraft Company at Gore who are superb d.h and biplane restorers, theres a very good transport museum at Christchurch with lots of aircraft, and that’s just off the top of my head, so plenty to photograph in NZ. And don’t forget the brilliant WW1 themed aviation centre at Omaka up near Blenheim. And then just the natural sights are pretty stunning. lots of Lord of the Rings country and scenery.

In Sydney, if you can get out to Camden there is the museum there, down to Wollongong/Albion Park is HARS, a bit further south is the RAN FAA Museum at Nowra, or duck down to Canberra to the Australian War Memorial. So in and around Sydney there is a bit to photograph, again both aviation and scenery wise.

Check out the Classic Wings magazine website as they have some good links to a number of aviation museums/attreactions in NZ and Australia.

For static work like this, I’ve done fairly well using a compact semi-pro camera rather than lugging around the full camera kit. I suppose it comes down to how much weight and gear you want to lug around and keep an eye on whilst travelling. But too many good things not to have a semi-decent camera to take photos.

Hope this helps.

There’s the Alpine Fighter Collection at Wanaka, NZ (at least I think that is where they are based). Not sure if the collection is open to the public other than for airshows though. I’m sure there are members of this forum who will be able to provide better information and will give you a definitive answer fairly soon.
