Anyway AOl have told me so far to do the following.
1)reinstall dsl modem……………result none!
2)reset internal program adaptors and run auto repair in AOL ………..result none!
3) Reinstall AOL completly ………………. result AOL keeps putting my screen res down to 8 bit colours ! 😡

NEWSFLASH !!!
having just spent three days picking apart AOLs guts the true reason has been reveiled by my local computer supplier.
AOL IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP ! and no matter what you do for the near future won’t be.
i have got around my problems by downloading another copy of AOL 9 over writing existing one and has 70% solved it but i still need to go back every half hour and open a web page to keep it happy.
The only reason i’m sticking with it is the unlimited downloads
Also one other thing sugeste is getting a powered external usb hub as this most systems only provide so much power to the ports and this can affect connection length

No more online flying till sorted as Fs will not connect at 8 bit colours

This is a longshot, but I have had the same problem with my cable connection. In my case I discovered when installing windows that the guy who installed it before didnt install the network drivers for my mobo creating some kind of ip conflict. And since Im connected to my cable modem by LAN connection, that solved it.

I have a similar intermitent problem with disconnecting 😡 😡 😡
The connection can sometimes go all day absolutely fine, but when it feels like it…. it will d**k me around disconnecting every 5 minutes and then taking 20 minutes to re-intialise 😡 😡
I’m with Freeserve (Wannadoo) and guess what they blamed me updating Windows, seriously they wanted me to use windows out of the box! They’re insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway I think that it is due to noise on the line, pick the phone up and distortion galore, I arranged for a Wannadoo broadband engineer to look at it took the day off and everything. He turned up, after turning up on the wrong day  and then told me that the line wasn’t his domain and that I had to call BT, so another days holiday wasted.
Anyway the line still disconnects and I have to get my ar*e in gear to ring them up to sort it out. Anyway thats what your problem sounds like to me. Try changing filters around, if you have a phone plugged in to the filter remove it and try again. Can you hear any distortion on the line? Anyway its worth calling BT (or the equivalent) to come out and check your line.
This of course assuming you were talking about Broadband 🙂
