Apparently the world is just 6,000 years old

A friend on holiday in Iceland has just met up with a ‘creationist’

The wiki definition of this bizarre belief system follows

Creationism is the religious belief that life, the Earth, and the universe are the creation of a supernatural being.

As science developed during the 18th century and forward, various views aimed at reconciling the Abrahamic and Genesis creation narratives with science developed in Western societies. Those holding that species had been created separately (such as Philip Gosse in 1847) were generally called “advocates of creation” but were also called “creationists”, as in private correspondence between Charles Darwin and his friends. As the creation–evolution controversy developed over time, the term “anti-evolutionists” became common. In 1929 in the United States, the term “creationism” first became associated with Christian fundamentalists, specifically with their rejection of human evolution and belief in a young Earth—although this usage was contested by other groups, such as old Earth creationists and evolutionary creationists, who hold different concepts of creation

Young-Earth creationism fosters the belief that God created the Earth within the last ten thousand years, literally as described in the Genesis creation narrative, within the approximate time-frame of biblical genealogies (detailed for example in the Ussher chronology). Most Young-Earth creationists believe that the Universe has a similar age as the Earth. A few assign a much older age to the Universe than to Earth. Some creationist thinkers attempt with Creationist cosmologies to give the universe an age consistent with the Ussher chronology and other Young-Earth time frames. Other Young-Earth creationists believe that the Earth and the universe were created with the appearance of age, so that the world appears to be much older than it is, and that this appearance is what gives the geological findings and other methods of dating the earth and the universe their much longer timelines. However, this view has theological implications – an intentional appearance of age is form of false evidence and so a form of deception.

So to sum up it, as science grew it became apparent that the Adam & Eve story was arrant nonsense. So this idea grew up to try and keep the fantasy of a supreme being alive. Key to this is that he knocked-up the earth (and presumably the solar system) some 6,000 – 10,000 years back.

Obviously, since carbon dating can with a fair degree of accuracy take us a lot further back than that it is insupportable, yet there are still a huge number of people who in some way think this is The Truth. Echoes of the Burma Spitfire beliefs.

As the other religious discussion has proved even-tempered and interesting I thought I would chuck this one in for people’s opinion.

So. Complete fruitloops, or in some way I have missed, explicable?

A word can have multiple meanings, depending on context. The meaning it has for scientist or specialist may be very different to the meaning it has for a layman. That is why I can chug down a beer while reading a technical paper on chugging in liquid propellant rocket motors, then go outside to pet a neighbour’s chug puppy.

.

I knew a street hustler very well, that is the rationalization of the truth that they often use.

There is truth and there is bs, changing the meaning of a word to fit one’s rhetoric is bs.

Bruggen – sparing your rant I prefer to deal in evidence not myth or unsubstantiated distorted mischief making. Of course everything in nature affects the earth and always has done. It’s what is affected and how is what matters.

Why is it Charles that when your gobbin off you think that every thing you say should be taken as fact, yet when someone disagrees with you it’s a Rant.
The worlds weather has gone to pot and you just think it’s a bit of a hiccup, what does the worlds population have to reach before you think it will effect the earth 10 billion 40 billion or never?

Have you thought about beginning a campaign to re-label Darwin’s Theory as Darwin’s Law ? Hope you’ve got plenty of spare time !

The knowledge about Evolution, Relativity is out there, it’s just some people just don’t want to know the truth, and to label The origin of species as just a theory is an insult to one of the greatest minds
in history. And as for my certainty well that’s a cheek coming from you because you have it in bucket loads.

religious myths

LOL–That is the same attitude young earth creationists have when confronted with the fact there is no proof for their dogma.

You just carry on reading your fiction and turn your blind eye to how the real world works

Which of course shows how irrelevant man’s contribution has been as it has all happened many times before, as I pointed out. Is that so hard to understand?

Only an idiot would think that 6-7 billion people can not have any effect on planet earth. would you p!ss in the same well that you drink from, so why can’t you understand that is what we are doing to the air that we breath. At the time of the last ice age the population was probably less than a couple of million people. This planet is not like a computer it does not have reset button once we change it it’s gone forever.

Re 30

Bruggen 130.

You’re the first to test my New Year’s resolution ! (See GD). But I’m determined to remain polite. That was a very angry reply and consequently not at all sensible. I’m not a Creationist or any other sort of ist. What I do lack about some things and what, apparently, you have in spades, is your certainty. You must be privy to a knowledge that somehow I’ve overlooked.

When the Earth, for extremely long periods was without Polar ice and covered in dense, decaying carbon rich vegetation, the oceans, fulfilling part of their function, acted as colossal heat exchangers and absorbed most of the excess carbon that wasn’t being used in the propagation of yet more Earth covering vegetation. They still satisfactorily perform that function at a time when your favourite people, dubiously titled ‘scientists’ are busy inventing yet more creative propaganda to support their equally dubious and frequently downright fraudulent man made global warming assertions.

Now perhaps, we come to some agreement. What I would like to put in place – and it is nothing to do with any of your arguments or mine, is a sustained program – world wide where conditions agree – of tree planting and population control in those areas of the world that experience endemic famine. Since I was young the same TV ads have been appearing. Heart wrenching pictures of children drinking filthy water and enduring starvation seemingly without end. Please do not write that this is just a manifestation of your bete noir; man made global warming. These ads were appearing in the 50s long before it was fashionable for the chattering classes to go on about it.

Have you thought about beginning a campaign to re-label Darwin’s Theory as Darwin’s Law ? Hope you’ve got plenty of spare time !

A word either means what it says or it is worthless babble.

Your two supposed meanings counter each other so that is obtuse.
Such attempts at changing what a word means is usually called vulgarization of a word.

Because it’s only in the last hundred years or so that we have been pumping all sorts of crap up there, is that really so hard to understands:

If we had two identical planets,

Planet A inhabited by religious people,

Planet B inhabited by scientists ,biologists and non believers ,

I wonder which planet would thrive or die.Would they both die off along with the inhabitants?

That would depend solely on whether or not there is a god,

The word theory has two definitions. 1 = A mere notion, idea, or speculation. Yes you could dream those up all day long, but you couldn’t dream up a theory belonging to the second definition, or scientific theory, which is –
a hypothesis that has been confirmed or established by observation or experiment , and is propounded or accepted as accounting for the known facts; a statement of what are held to be the general laws, principles, or causes of something known or observed. *

* The Greatest Show on Earth – Richard Dawkins

Evolution firmly belongs in the second definition.

The word theory has only one meaning, regardless of scientists attempts to change its meaning to fit their desires.

A word either means what it says or it is worthless babble.

Theory– from Oxford English Dictionary, the one most used by scholars

noun (plural theories)

a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain
something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained: Darwin’s theory of evolution
a set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based: a theory of education music theory
an idea used to account for a situation or justify a course of action: my theory would be that the place has been seriously mismanaged
Mathematics a collection of propositions to illustrate the principles of a subject.

John – The reason its not called the Law of Evolution is that a law does not deal with the explanation, only the observation, whereas the theory does. Darwin knew nothing of genetics and most of the really significant fossils have been found after his time. However everything thats been learned since his time backs evolution to the hilt.

I would be interested to know how you think life on earth came about.

So what happened in the millennia before man evolved? Warming and cooling has gone on in cycles for millions of years. And man has survived both.

Because it’s only in the last hundred years or so that we have been pumping all sorts of crap up there, is that realy hard to understand. Well at least you admit that man evolved so there is hope for you yet Charles:eagerness:

Bruggen 130

The ‘Big Bang’ origin remains a convenient theory just like evolution – that is why it is called a theory – man made global warming theory and ‘man emerged from bogs in Africa’ theory.

I can dream up theories all day long!

Rubbish, it stopped being a theory a long time ago, creationists like to use that word to endorse their beliefs when really they don’t understand what it means. If someone has a theory and that theory is
tested and those tests give the same results every time then it’s accepted in the scientific world as fact, but if just one of those tests give a different result then it’s thrown out, the laws of evolution and
relativity have passed every test thrown at them. If people like Galileo, Copernicus, Einstein and hundreds of other brilliant minds had thought like you and a few others on here we would still be using horse an carts to get around.
BTW As you sit in your abode reading this and thinking of another crackpot reply just look around you and take this in, everything you see is man made apart from any house plants you have, even the wood in the building has taken energy to produce and that energy produces heat that goes up, multiply that 5 or 6 billion times and you just might get the scale of the problem we are causing. Just plain common sense should tell you that we must be having an effect on this tiny planet, because there isn’t a cleaning lady up there with a scrubbing brush. It’s not set in stone that this planet has to have an oxygen atmosphere it’s just chemistry if you mix stuff together you end up with something else.
Happy New Year.

You could have replied with one word: “empiricism”.

The Theory of Evolution is not entirely empirically derived that is why it is called the Theory of Evolution and not the Law of Evolution.

Darwin could draw only upon his own observations and experiments and perhaps those recorded by others over relatively short human lifespans. To become Law requires empiricism beyond all doubt.

But the Big Bang does not and is being superseded by new theories yet to be tested.
