Operation of ’Permit-to-fly’ Ex-military Aircraft
on the UK Register

2.3 Ejection Seats
As discussed in Chapter 5 paragraph 4, most ex-military aircraft fitted with ejection
seats will be required to have them serviceable. For those where this is not
mandatory, mainly the Jet Provost aircraft, it is highly recommended that operators
give serious consideration to the survival advantages of live ejection seats.

Back in my Bentwaters days, we had a HH-53 do an off-airport landing in to a pasture because of a chip light.
The provincial papers made it sound like a disaster of Biblical proportions was narrowly averted…

It seems they never let the mundane truth get in the way of a good headline.

and to add a point, a trained and qualified pilot recovered from a “situation”, landed the aircraft with no damage to life or limb – I just wonder how many people were involved in road traffic accidents in Devon yesterday…..

STRIKEMASTER CRASH

Despite what everyone has read in the media, i can confirm that the aircraft had been flying for 50 minutes before the crash and the pilot made the decision to land the aircraft in a field and not to eject, its just a shame that the field was not 100 feet longer. a large hedge got in the way. the landing was totally controlled and both pilots walked away from the scene although they are both pretty sore from hitting the bank. The pilot who i will not name did a landing that anyone should be proud off in that situation as there is very little damage to the area and it was under control right to the end.

After reading some of the media reports it makes me smile because no matter what the truth is they will print whatever they want. Lets just let the AAIB do there job so that we can make sure that whatever caused the problem will not happen again.

Says Paul as he books his holiday to Spain/Malta/Greece/Florida on an aircraft which has probably more landings and take offs to its credit than he has had hot dinners during anywhere up to the 30 years it may have been in service.

seems our man Paul is getting some “debate” on his points… so we scrap all airliners at 10 years old – that’ll save the planet, and I’ve just done a mental count of what the RAF would be flying……..

1/2 dozen new Hawks
some Merlins
Those Chinooks that were stuck at Boscombe down maybe
Eurofighters.

Paul says he goes to Scotland on the train….. I’ll sleep easy in my bed tonight now…

Comments like that show the educational/PR burden the aviation community (and the GA/warbirds/antique/vintage sub-communities) has got to address.

We’re (pilots/aviation fans) vastly outnumbered and comments like that make good editorials, headlines and letters to politicians.
The news “green” part of his arguement is just another weapon in their arsenal against aviation.

We’ll see/hear more of this.
Lord help us if there is a large airshow tragedy.

In the meantime, do what you can to support aviation…join an organization that does some outreach/educational/political work.

Interesting comment posted onto the BBC site :

This aircraft had also made a wheelsup landing a couple of years ago in South Africa due to Electrical faillure.
