ARC Lysander G-CCOM

Hello all, does anyone know whether this aircraft is due to be restored to flying condition ever?

And am I right in thinking that the only LYsander currently airworthy is the Shuttleworth one?

Sorry if this has been discussed recently, I’m new…..

Having been following the progress of this Lizzie over the past 18 months I have to agree with you Roobarb, the attention to detail and workmanship is simply stunning.

You are right there Merlin70. Thanks for showing me the way to building 66 on DX the other day. The skill and attention to detail is simply amazing. Those wooden wings shurely are a masterpiece. 😎

I do believe this lissie is well on its way to fly again.

There always seems to be a bloke in the corner of your pictures with his arms crossed……..do you think he gets a bit cold or something? 😀

I don’t get out much, and therefore feel the cold 😀 !

As for Merlin 70’s pics……the truth is out that Roobarb is actually a cartoon character after all! :diablo:

I don’t know should we ask him? :p Perhaps he’s the ‘Man from the Ministry’. Maybe he crossed his arms to prevent him from taking lots of pictures. 🙂

The chap in the ‘blue suit’ turns up quite a bit as well. He might know a thing or two about Lizzies and Blenheims.

And then there’s the other people in blue.

The CWH Lysander has ground run, and there was a report in Aeroplane Monthly indicating a possible flight this (northern) Autumn, but I understand it will probably be longer than that before it flies as there is a lot to be done still. It’s a magnificent job though.

Kermit’s hasn’t flown since it arrived in the USA. It’s not ‘airworthy’ in any meanigful sense now, though it could be made to fly.

Also in the USA, the NASM Lysander was airworthy had had been flown by owner Don Brookes for many years before it’s donation. It’s now dangling on a string in the new Udvar Hazey display.

There is another sleeper in Canada…that being Harry Whereatt’s C-FVZZ. It sure looks airworthy, but I have no idea if it has flown.

Oh and many years ago (1967) the Rockcliffe Lizzie flew too.

I have a pretty much treasured slide of THREE Lysanders flying in formation, not so long ago at Duxford, in the mid’90s – Shuttleworths + Sabena Oldtimers + G-BCWL(now with Kermit Weeks) while IWM’s G-LIZY was outside on the ground!

I’m have a piccie somewhere of the four of them in a row on the grass at Flying Legends – v nice

Which was the WoGB one that ended up on its back at Bobbington / Halfpenny Green / Wolverhampton Intergalactic Spaceport?

……and don’t worry about people thinking you’re a bit odd doing that……it’s quite normal and has been going on for years! Just ask some of the others on this forum…… 😉 😀

The Sabena Old Timer’s project is one to airworthy, another to static.

The RAF Museum’s Lysander had flown postwar before being selected for preservation and grounded.

So Shuttleworth are holding the torch.

Cheers

The ARC Lizzy is certainly NOT “on hold” at the moment, and anyone poking their head into the open doors of Building 66 at Duxford will see the extremely time consuming nature of the rebuild. The wings are the most visual aspect currently on the go, and the workmanship being expended on them is stunning, and I do not use that word lightly! This is a complex rebuild by the nature of its construction and it is not going to “be at Legends” for some considerable time, but when it is I am sure everyone will be suitably impressed. However the best time to get a grasp of the nature of why an aeroplane takes a long time to rebuild and what goes into that process (apart from lots and lots of time, effort and cash), is to visit it and view it as it is being restored and even better visit it several times. Then when it appears on the flightline you will be in a better position to understand what went into getting it there in the first place. If the double doors are not open then try peering in through the dusty windows-oh and don’t worry about people thinking you’re a bit odd doing that……it’s quite normal and has been going on for years! Just ask some of the others on this forum…… 😉 😀

Sorry, last time I saw John and Colin they indicated it was – cheers TT

I’ll look forward to seeing another Lizzie in the air eventually. Last time I saw one was at DX, either 1998 or 2000??

Kermit Weeks machine was airworthy when it left the U.K so strictly speaking it might well still be .Whether it’s paperwork is done in the U.S is another matter.

Hang on, haven’t the Canadians got one that is ground-running and may well have flown by now?

Hi there Finlay – yes it will be but i think its on hold for the moment, last time i was there they were trying to source some Lizzie wheels – complex internally sprung jobbies apparently.

The old Sabena Lysander is in Belgium under restoration and i beleive they have a second one – not sure if both are to airworthy condition.

Shuttleworth have the only airworthy Lysander in the UK at the moment.

Hope that helps
