Please can you translate the lettering on the side of the “Hellenic Flame” Sabre? The original team never had that on them! Thanks
It means HELLENIC FLAME (ELLHNIKH FLOGA)

Nice photos!!!
BTW this was not the 1st Greek airshow…
…Contrary to common belief, during the 1950’s and 60’s Airshows were very common in Greece, featuring visits -among others- from the Skyblazers and the Blue Angels, while the 3 (then)RHAF Acroteams made shows in the Athens International Airport at Hellinikon with crowds of over 200.000 people in attendance. Airshows took place also in various Airbases in Greece and over Greek cities as well. On the same time they performed all over Europe becoming famous for their expert flying in Le Bourget or Spangdahlem for example…

Yes it’s painted with the colors of the HAF Aerobatic Team, called Hellenic Flame
It acted between 1958 and 1964, consisting of initial five, later seven, Canadair Sabre Mk. 2’s, based at Tanagra (where the Airshow took place). During their existence, they became quite famous for their displays not only within Greece, but also in France, West Germany, Italy and Turkey.Hope that flame burn again 🙂

As you said it! Note that in HAF has also a light-attack role (the -E is a – C with equipment -avionics & pods- for this role) and also a great helicopter hunder!
It is very popular between the pilots

Thanks for that, Petros. The prototype T2 first flew in ’58 – if the HAF retire it as planned, that means it would have been used as a training aircraft in a number of air arms for 50 years or so. Impressive record, one of the ‘unsung’ aircraft.

Yes, T-2E is still in service (less than 35 operational) with HAF and probably will remain in service untill 2010. Actually the procedure for finding its relief is on it’s way with many candidates.
It is used on the final training stage, where the pilots learn more complicated manouvers and flight tactics but also learn to use the aircraft as a weapon.

nice pics, Petros. Excuse my ignorance of the Greek Air Force, but is the T2 still in service ? – if not, is it still airworthy ?
