Are Air Marshals really effective?

Here is an interesting article, what do you guys think? Have any Air Marshalls ever stopped a terrorist attack?

Sheriffs of the sky

Pretty boring job if you ask me , can’t even have a beer, or as they say hours of sheer boredom interspersed with moments of sheer terror.

…(Makes me feel safe to know that TSA PCs, the one taking your fingerprints, are hooked to the web). Maybe they should start profiling people… Even if it isn’t politically correct..

Refer him to your Face Book page for a character reference. He will probably believe you! 😀

Maybe they should ask El Al how to manage airline security… It is pretty annoying to be treated like a criminal while you have nothing to hide, and on the other hand, someone with bad intentions is apparently let through without questions asked. Last time I went through US immigration, I was questionned by 10 minutes by a guy who didn’t even know US geography. He checked if my destination airport existed… on Google Maps, that was on his PC. Exactly my point. Although as I mentioned on a previous post my travel through Lagos Airport on Friday night they seem to have jacked up abit with their security as everyone got scanned and frisked. No exceptions.

That said, I read on the news today that the US and Nigeria have agreed a deal whereby all US flights from Nigeria will have US air marshalls on them as long as they train the Nigerians .

Hard to say – perhaps their deterrent effect forestalled some attacks even before the bad guys left the house… but we’ll never know about it…

I’d say they’d be next to useless in preventing a competent suicide bomber.

Very useful for aggressive drunks and other thugs, but perhaps their heyday was back in what must now seem like the ‘good old days’ – when terrorists actually wanted to escape with their own lives and sometimes swapped hostages for relatively minor concessions instead of taking everyone with them…

mind you El-Al have a fairly heavy security presence onboard don’t they and they seem fairly incident-free?
