Are horror flicks today more or less scary???

Just a thought. I was watching “The House on Haunted Hill” for the first time last night, the newer version of the nineties…not the classic, and by the end of thirty minutes I was bored s***less. The special effects ruined the whole movie. The acting was terrible and the storyline was non-existant.
When I want a scare it is strange that I would rather turn to movies made in the seventies or eighties such as Omen, The Exorcist or even Alien to get my heart pounding rather than watching Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf in Paris or Wrong Turn (which is s*** by the way).
Has Holly Wood lost the plot on how to scare us or am I being overly critical??? I know that The Ring is meant to be a good movie, I haven’t seen it yet, but are there any others you can reconmend to me?

Silence of the lambs was a chilling film and Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Hannabal Lector was brilliant and thoroughly deserved the Oscar.

Event Horizon was ‘creepy’ but for the terror value Alien is miles ahead. You know that somebody is going to get ‘nibbled’ if
a) they get separated from others b) open a room/cupboard etc c) hear a odd noise and go to investigate, unarmed and in the dark

A friend of mine flew to London for a week then flew home a few years ago… don’t ask… but the movie he had to watch 4 times will haunt him forever… The Man in The Iron Mask!!!! the de crapio version!!!

I have the original house on haunted hill on DVD… it isn’t very scary either, but it is fun. I love Vincent Price movies, though I perfer the Dr. Phibes etc movies. The House of Wax (or something) was a classic. The original Alien movie was cool, and I enjoyed Event Horizon, but alos like funny splatter movies that intend to be funny… the toxic avenger and a few movies by a NZ chap that is finishing off his third movie about a ring shortly. (Bad Taste)

Daz, I have to agree with you. Jaws is the ultimate horror movie. I feel a bit cheated because i was born too late to get to see it for the first time in theaters. I can’t even begin to imagine how scary it was for those who saw it in the theater the first time. My mom isn’t scared by very many movies, but she told me that Jaws certainly scared her when she saw it for the first time.

Even today when I watch it, I get chills when that music comes on. Part of the greatness of that movie is how they make it seems like there shark is there by using just music and certain camera angles.

Jaws scared me the first time I saw it that’s for sure.

As a general rule i dont’ think movies are as scary as they used to be.

One of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen is the original Halloween. That movie to this day, gives me the creeps. That mask is just…….well, creepy. I think Michael Myers is much scarier than Freddy or Jason could ever hope to be because he’s a much more believable evil force.

The Ring is scary, but the Japanese original (Ringu) is S C A R Y !!! I’m not that easily scared by horror flics, but the Japanese version of the Ring definately gave me the creeps.

Another one i consider a serious nerve-wrecker was Event Horizon. Brrr… Oh, and In the mouth of Madness was pretty bad as well when i saw it for the first time. And it wasn’t just Sam Neill in either one of those who creeped me out.

I wouldn’t say it’s fair to lump “Dog Soldiers” in with the Hollywood crap that comes out nowadays – it was something different, compared to the usual brand of stalk ‘n’ slash horror flicks that come out nowadays, and far more entertaining.

I’ve got it on both video and DVD, so maybe I’m a bit biased.

Anyway, the best horror movie ever made is JAWS! 😀

I think suspense type horror flicks are better than the slash and gore variety. I watched “The Others” starring Nocole Kidman recently, that scared the sh*t out of me I have to say. Creepy as hell !
