If submarines are obsolete they why are countries such as US, Russia, China etc designing and of course building newer models… i believe these military specialists hired arn’t all bunch of idiots. I have no idea what new technology he’s deaming about but the 636 subs the chinese are getting from the russian are quoted at around 90 decibels which is quite close to the surrounding noise. they are quite hard to detect with sonar.

and regarding the Taiwan U boats… did the states ever finalize on the design and make of the proposed ships to be provided to taiwan???

U206 for Taiwan? 🙂 Seriously though, the 206s and Kobben classes are retiring aren’t they? I wonder if China will object much to sale of used boats? I doubt Taiwan would want one of these though.

that one was an idiotic try to halt the chinese submarine fleet expansion. No sane person would ever agree to that.

Regarding the narrow strait of Taiwan,China and Taiwan can build small submarine to suit the surrounding! The North/South Korea 1997 infiltrator crisis involves this type of small and stealthy subs which escape the eyes of all those underwater surveillance! By the way, even next generation satelite cannot detect sub once submerge, who says sub is obsolete?

Hey Swingkid! I was almost laughing out of my chair as well when I read that very sentence you mentioned. Now this was a good laugh….

Please… stop… too… many… jokes!!!

The Americans have invented RADAR?!? Shouldn’t that be, like, classified or something? Seriously, relations with China warming up, you don’t think they’d share that technology with Taiwan do you? Maybe it’s a bluff?

😀

And what, pray tell, “old technology sensors” have submarines been successfully hiding from for the past fifty years..? …mirrors reflecting the sun??

Wait… didn’t I read somewhere the Russians are already using active-radar torpedos?

Please, I can’t take it anymore… Someone tell that damn fool, everyone knows submarines are coated with RADAR-ABSORBANT MATERIAL!! 😡 😡 😡

I gotta stop reading this site during office hours…

“The invention of radar, however, and subsequently satellite surveillance technology from the United States, meant that the advantages of being submerged were negated totally.”

The submarine is the most leathal weapon of all, untill the oceans become transparent that is…
I suppose that Special Technology is LIDAR? I’ve seen tests of it. It was used to draw the bottom of a river in that particular test. It could do the 3-hour work of a Sonar within a few minutes. And of course doesn’t have trouble with all the waterconditions and flow noise. But apparently, in that same test, the water better isn’t muddy or the thing doesn’t work anymore. Same with plants and huge amounts of plankton etc…
Oh, btw LIDAR means Light Detection and Ranging, same technology as SONAR but using light waves instead of Sound Waves. Haven’t followed that technology or at least found little result back then. It was used from a helo in that test…

“China, Taiwan and other nations are still eagerly buying and building submarines, electric, diesel and nuclear. These U-boats, however, would be virtually useless in the narrow and shallow Taiwan Strait, detected by ships and aircraft with high-technology and then destroyed.”

And what, pray tell, are these “high-technology” sensors?

“The invention of radar, however, and subsequently satellite surveillance technology from the United States, meant that the advantages of being submerged were negated totally.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! 😀 😀 😀

Oh.. oh… breathe. whew! Back to work.
