Hi Mike. If you Google “Duxford update” there’s a picture of the Varsity on that site which might show the appropriate aerial.

Oh is it? I’ve not seen it for a few years.

One is still rotting at Duxford and looking very shabby.

This thread has just brought a question to my mind. What happened to the two that were sat rotting at DX for years?

There’s a Varsity nose at Preston on the B1239 north of Hedon at a filling station-cum-scrapyard, that may still have the aerial on it.

I tried to search on the internet for that varsity but I cant find any contact info…?

I recall the Varsity at East Grinstead from my days at Northolt – it certainly still had the Rebecca aerials fitted when the fuselage was trucked away to East Grinstead. Might well be worth trying Sabre.
I understand that the aircraft was bought for security training purposes, so the aerials may well be surplus to requirements.

Lamps any chance of you getting a pic or two of the varsity?

Does anyone know if the East Grinstead Sabre Watch varsity is just for a collection or is it used for anything as its in very good condition. I live about 5 minutes away from it and should know, but don’t 😮
Not meaning to change the subject but there is a very nice ex RAF SAR Wessex also in good condition right next to it. 🙂

Charlielima do you have an email contact for Graham?
By: Charlielima5 - 16th December 2004 at 18:46
I believe the East Grinstead (ex Northolt Varsity) is not for sale/disposal but Graham Vale, owner of the Varsity at East Midlands Aeropark just may have a spare. I’d no idea this part was common to the Lancaster – maybe other aircraft had the same item too?

Bristol Varsity
The Varsity at Lulsgate was broken up on 9th May 2004. I am not sure if the cockpit was saved, but the engines were. The Trident and Dove were broken up in late July, and I think the noses were saved. Originally the Trident nose was earmarked for the Jet Age Museum, but it had been vandalised beyond recovery for them.
cheers,
Andy

I’m not sure where I read it, but it maybe the museum now based at Kemble. However it is quite possible that I am wrong.

The engines may already be earmarked for a local museum, I recall reading something along these lines somewhere recently.
Where ?
By: EN830 - 16th December 2004 at 12:02
According to a website on Google, the Varsity was ‘gifted’ to the airport (fire section perhaps ?) approx 2-3 years ago.
However there is a small photo of it on p233 of the current Wrecks’n’Relics 19 but i cant make out if it has aerial Peter needs.
If it is too far gone, perhaps items like engines & cockpit can be saved ?
Thoughts anyone ?
